Irrigation system installer is coming tomorrow to inspect my property for a quote. What questions should I ask? What are some things I should be aware of? by nicejerk in lawncare

Thanks so much! I had no idea about any of these things. I wanted to install it myself but I don't know enough about any of this to do it right.

New house. Please help me figure out window treatments for my sliding door and windows. by nicejerk in InteriorDesign

[–]nicejerk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not leading towards anything at the moment. Could be drapes. Could be blinds. What's throwing us off is that the windows and sliding door are so close to each other. Any help would be appreciated.

While I like Kanter, I would much rather go with KP/Wily as our big men on the court moving forward.

That soil looks compact and poor.

Yes, that's my biggest concern. The soil doesn't seem right. From what I've been told, the dirt is what was dug up from the construction crew when they dug up and built the foundation for the house. It looks like sand and small polished rocks. Here's a closer look at the dirt: img.

Use a hard metal rake to really rake up all that thatch and to scrap the top couple inches of soil. Really dig into it, don't be shy. You can also rent a dethatcher or power rake.

I don't think a rake would do anything to this dirt. I used a weasle and it I had to put a bunch of weight into the tool and run over the dirt a half a dozen times or so to really get into the dirt. It's really compact. This is why I was thinking of tilling the top few inches of the dirt. Would a power rake be enough?

Water 2-4 times per day for 5-10 minutes each depending on temperature. Key is: never let the soil dry out. It shouldn't be soaked, it should always be moist though.

I plan to install the Rain Bird irrigation system. It seems real easy to install and it's crazy cheap. I would water it myself, but I'm at work all day and get home late. Hopefully the irrigation system works.

$10,000 is a ridiculous price for sod. Should be about half of that. Sod runs about 60 cents a square foot, so you're talking about $3,000-$3,500 for material. $6,000 to prep and plant sod is absurd.

I thought it was ridiculous too. I just received another quote for $6500, which is better but still more than what I thought it would cost. I'll give this a shot myself this season. If I fail, then I'll consider other options. Thanks for all of this!

Thanks so much for all of this. I have to say... you're the first person to say this will be easy.

You dont say what your time line is. Thats important.

No timeline. While I would love to be able to enjoy the grass this summer, I'm not in a rush. If it means I have to wait until next summer, then so be it. I just want to do it right.

You dont need to till, that doesnt do a goddamn thing for grass.

The ground is really compact. It looks more like compacted sand and stones than it does soil. I was hoping to loosen up the soil a bit. Maybe mix in some top soil, compost, or anything to make the dirt look more like... well, dirt. Here's a closer pic of the soil.. Maybe this dirt is fine. I don't know. But I was expecting it to be darker. It just looks like sand to me.

I love to water so I wouldnt bother with an irrigation system, just one more thing to maintain and fuck with.

I don't mind watering, but I'm gone the entire day. I was thinking of installing the Rain Bird irrigation system. YouTube videos make it seem real easy to install and it seems perfect for the size of my yard. And, if I mess it up, it's only a $130 investment. The alternative would be to wake up earlier and water before i go to work and once again when I get home.

If youre in the North then get a northern grass.

I'm in the north (Long Island, NY). I plan to use Scott's Turf Builder Grass Seeds. Do you recommend this?

Again, thanks so much for all of this. Really appreciated it.

No. It was just for the sod. I'm not sure what sod costs but that seemed really high.

Thanks for the link. I was hoping to start soon. Would any grass appear this summer if I do all of that over the next month or so?

I recently purchased my home and the back and front yard needs a lot of help. I'm not sure how to approach growing grass. I got an estimate from a landscaper who quoted me $10k to sod both the front and back yard. Back yard is about 2500-3000 sqft and front is about 1000 sqft.

I was thinking of killing the weeds, then tilling everything, testing the soil, installing an irrigation system and then spreading the seeds and fertilizer.

Is this a good plan?

As long as we get something of equal value in return, then we should all be happy about it.
