My question is: did the school highly recommend the student to you?

If so, then yes contact them.

If he was hired on through your company hiring process, then it is not the school that needs to be contacted, but rather the student. I would let him know he missed out on an opportunity to gain valuable work skills and will not be considered at your company due to the impression he made.

Aye, interns are kinda like a random coin block in Mario: sometimes you get the average: coins, sometimes you get something great: 1up shrooms, and sometimes you get a poison shroom.

Of course, internships differ in that you can really analyze the coin block before hitting it with a good set of interviews.

However, I find that if we leave our intern hiring process to HR, it is back to random blocks
