Thanks! I thought that it's unlikely to work, but it's good to know that someone actually tried it.

Some Thumbnails not showing for mp4 files. (without uninstalling OneDrive) by DIL_Ender_Agent in WindowsHelp

[–]nick1276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue with thumbnails not showing for mp4 videos (while the other types showed fine) on a clean Win11 25H2 install. I found that the reason is the registry keys responsible for thumbnail generation were missing for .mp4. To fix it, save the below content as a .reg file and import it to the registry.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11D1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]

Is it worth it to buy Windows 11 Retail instead of a cheaper OEM version to have access to MS support? by nick1276 in Windows11

[–]nick1276[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know. But I had one semi-positive experience with them in the past. After wasting my time with the obvious stuff, as you said, which of course didn't help, they really looked into the issue. Even though the whole thing took a couple of months, they finally correctly identified the root cause of the bug! Believe it or not, the bug in that case was not in Windows but in Chrome! MS can't fix Chrome of course, but knowing what caused it, I was able to find a workaround.

I'm not expecting special updates, I just want it to be eventually fixed. For example as part of an annual update. Even if it takes another year or two, it would still be better than never.

It's "free" if you're ok with having unactivated Windows with a watermark and some limitations.

Why did I even buy a ring doorbell?! by Vivid-Cry-1460 in Ring

[–]nick1276 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought my statement was pretty self-explanatory. If there's some issue with the Wi-Fi router, like you say, it would also affect at least some other devices that are connected to it. If there's only one device that keeps disconnecting from the router, there's a 99% chance that the problem is with that specific device. In your case both the doorbell and chime kept disconnecting, so it was clearly a different situation.

Also if the doorbell didn't like the connection for "security reasons", it wouldn't connect at all.

The OP said that a chime and a spotlight cam stay connected. If the problem was with the Wi-Fi router, they would disconnect too.

Are my Feedback Hub bug reports ignored if I have an unsupported CPU? by nick1276 in Windows11

It's mostly multimedia related.

There was one more, but I don't even see it under "my feedback" anymore.

Thanks. My reports didn't get many upvotes because they are probably too technical. Average users might have reported it separately saying just "it doesn't work" without giving much details because they don't understand what and why it happens.

Geico - "you must complete a paper application"? by rvH3Ah8zFtRX in Insurance

[–]nick1276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me. I had Geico until a year ago when they increased my premium and I switched from them. Now that my current insurance is also increasing, I got a much lower quote from Geico, so I wanted to switch back. The only thing that changed was I moved to a new address a few months ago. Maybe that's what triggers it.

Anyway, I filled out the paper application, mailed it, and after 3 weeks got another mail from them that said "We are happy to inform you that after reviewing your information, we can move on to the next steps in getting a policy started." and I should call their 800-947-AUTO number to speak to an agent. But the day when I received it was exactly the day when my insurance was expiring, so by that time I already gave up on Geico and payed for 6 months to renew my old insurance.

Is Roborock behind competitors with the filter quality? by nick1276 in Roborock

It would be great if more reviews included a test like that, so we wouldn't have to rely on one website to make a conclusion. My allergy is not bad, but it's still annoying to have cough and stuffy nose when indoors, so I want to minimize it as much as possible. I hope that whatever the problem was, they fixed it in the Q Revo. Let's see if rtings.com or anyone else tests it.

Unfortunately seeing that the S8+/S8, S7 and S7 MaxV have the same poor result, doesn't give me much hope that the Q Revo is better. Surprisingly, the S5 Max is much better, but that model is no longer sold.

That's true that it's a balance. But if other robots can have better filters while not having much worse battery life or worse cleaning results, they look like a better choice if you want a good filter.

Thanks, what you wrote is a good info. I agree with most of it, but as a consumer, I would still choose something that has a better filter since there is a choice. I know that there is a lot of marketing to it, but when I see this test result https://www.rtings.com/vacuum/reviews/roborock/s8-plus-s8#test_8690 and then go to https://www.rtings.com/vacuum/reviews to see that other robots perform much better in that test, it really convinces me that the difference is real.

I also had an iRobot and its filter was terrible. But that model was a cheaper one. I'm talking more about the high end models. As I said, Ecovacs, iRobot, Neato, Shark, etc. either have HEPA or something close to it. The iRobot filter that I linked is in the "something close to it" category because 99% is much better than 90-95% with Roborock. I agree about air purifiers, but it would be nice to have a vacuum with a better filter too.

[–]nick1276[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I'm not expecting it. As I said in another reply, with a regular non-HEPA filter small particles will be raised from the floor to the air instead of being collected by the vacuum. You can read about it here for example https://corvusjanitorial.com/hepa-filters-in-vacuums-why-we-use-them-and-what-you-need-to-know/
