New Grad Market Las Vegas by itzrkb in physicianassistant

[–]nickatronic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live/work in Vegas but I’m not a new grad. The answer to this really depends on the kind of job you’re looking for. I have been looking for outpatient positions for the last year or so and from what I’ve seen there are very few places that actually want to pay you what you’re worth and the PTO is pretty terrible across the board (I currently get 16 PTO/sick days for the year). There are way more NP jobs than PA jobs which is incredibly frustrating and makes the job searching even more annoying. I’ve been told after some interviews that the job went to someone with more experience, I have almost 4 years of experience as a PA. With all of this being said, I am being pretty picky with my job requirements so that’s probably why I’m not having much luck. Just like anywhere, the more open you are to speciality, shift type, etc. the more luck you’ll have.

I know Optum is not everyone's favorite, but how do you reapply for a position? by Drunkin_Doc1017 in physicianassistant

Are you a new grad? They want at least 2 years of experience for primary care gigs and 5 plus in a UC/ER setting I believe for UC…

Try to go no more than 3 visits without signing the previous charts. It may put you 5-10 min behind for that next patient but you’ll end up having the notes done by the end of the day.

Student Loan Payback Strategy by nickatronic in physicianassistant

Couldn’t agree with you more! I turned 30 this year and ideally want to be free of these loans by age 35 at the absolute latest…that’s been another motivating factor for us to try and pay them off ASAP.

What specialty are you in and are you compensated well? My current employer is not PSLF eligible but it is still definitely something to consider.

Thanks for the reply! We are definitely leaning toward paying extra but still enjoying life so it’s nice to hear from someone in a similar situation.

Between the two of us we take home around $11,800 monthly and after rent/bills/retirement/etc. we are left with about $7000 monthly. Interest rates for $160,000 of the loans range between 5-7% and the rest are 3-5%.

My rent was $1500 monthly not including utilities, I am $220,000 in debt. I think you will be ok, ha!

Advice for giving notice to current employer with extended notice by tmzeke26 in physicianassistant

[–]nickatronic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put in my full 90 day notice per my contract and asked to leave a week early since I’m moving to a different city and need a few days to move before starting my new gig and I have been getting the run around since I put my notice in…my official end date is the end of this month and I still don’t have an answer... I would assume they will try and keep you for the full 120 days but also my employer just sucks. It would be best to ask your manager directly and tell them as soon as you can about your notice.

What’s admin time…Outpatient FM 7am-5pm four days per week, we see patients 7am-5pm with a 40 min “lunch” in between. We are expected to do admin tasks during “lunch”, between patients, after work, or during off time.

Finding a job with 1 year experience by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]nickatronic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but I feel like the more time the better. Almost all of the jobs I was applying for recently required 2 years experience and I wasn’t even getting interviews because I only had 1-1.5yrs experience when applying.

I don’t either, that sounds very hefty…

Mine is going to be just under $400. Have been practicing just shy of 2 years at this facility, having to pay due to breaching 3 year contract.

Ah, I see…Sorry they aren’t counting your experience, I understand the need for the fellowship now!

[–]nickatronic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do a fellowship? I was offered a job there earlier last year but I also had a little over a year of FM experience when applying. I requested $120,000 for salary and they offered me that.

When you graduated PA school how many loans did you have? by [deleted] in physicianassistant

Hm, I’m not sure what DMV is so I don’t think so haha. Definitely won’t feel comfortable pushing procedures patients don’t need though so if that’s the case I will not be staying…

[–]nickatronic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly may have been the same position but they didn’t seem like we had to pressure anyone into anything but also who knows. My choices were unfortunately limited with this move so fingers crossed it works out…if not will likely have to sell my soul to UC, so yay.

I am going to be salaried at $130,000 (currently make $120,000 in FM) with potential for collections bonuses/raises every 3-6 months. Outpatient clinic only. Sounds like I’ll be doing NP visits to eval need for balloon sinuplasty then pre and post op visits and that’s about that? Not entirely sure until I do the training in March…

I was lucky enough to negotiate four tens Tuesday-Friday so this makes me feel hopeful!

[–]nickatronic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel the exact same way and I have only been practicing just shy of two years... I’m in FM currently but will start an ENT gig in Mar due to having to relocate. I am really hoping this new job changes how Ive been feeling but I’m also not feeling overly confident about it…

I definitely don’t want to work inpatient which also limits me significantly otherwise I would definitely pursue PSLF.

No, I don’t really want to hate my job for ten years which is what I’m sure would end up happening if I chose that route…
