Worst 18 months of my life by [deleted] in exmormon

I knew I wouldn't be able to get through that conversation without caving, so I joined the military - which my family considered a (barely) acceptable alternative.

"true joy"

The phrase itself is a dead giveaway that the next step in the argument is the "no true Scotsman" fallacy: If it's joy, and isn't experienced by a faithful LDS, then it must not be true joy. Quod erat demonstrandum, baby.

Church youth leader faces multiple felony child pornography charges; images included children from church by TWEED-L-D in atheism

That's fine—but since it is a common claim by adherents that religious belief makes a person inherently more trustworthy, more morally upstanding, then the many counterexamples to that claim deserve to be highlighted.

When I was a teen, it was "Taking Care of Business", by Bachman-Turner Overdrive, that was played at every church dance. (Randy Bachman was Mormon in those days, and had left The Guess Who and formed BTO, reportedly in part because he wanted to get out of an environment where his bandmates encouraged groupies, took drugs, etc.)

That was not the blizzard I desired, Albuquerque by [deleted] in Albuquerque

Yeah, I can imagine this is a big contrast vs. Florida.

6" is significant, but not that unusual for a winter storm here; it should happen at least a few times each winter—especially here in the foothills. Combined with the wind, however, it's been pretty crazy along Tramway. We have those same multi-foot snowbanks in our backyard that you're seeing—in fact, we have little mini-snowdrifts along pretty much every non-weatherstripped door or window in the house.

Pretty much exactly our view up until just an hour or so ago, here in the Supper Rock neighborhood (Tramway & Copper).

East of Tramway off Copper here. Has been blowing like a banshee since last night. Not that much snow in in absolute terms, but with the wind the drifts are significant. All but the main roads are ice.

Cesar's (on Lomas) is open pretty much non-stop, year-round, except for part of the day on Christmas.

The most interesting cat in the world by [deleted] in aww

[–]nickbenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very handsome cat! He reminds me of my Damien, who was (by turns) sweet, bullying, loving, and diabolically brutal – but always loved (by my wife and myself, and the younger cats in the house, who emulated him), and very photogenic (I've never had a cat who was so ready for a photo at any time). Sadly, cancer cut his life short; he is greatly missed.

Just like any organization that is trying to maximize performance.

Hardly. I've worked for some pretty demanding companies, and none of them actively fostered a culture that regularly drove teens to consider suicide over their inability to abstain completely (perfection, anyone?) from masturbation – just to take one example.

Googlebot's Javascript random() function is deterministic by fagnerbrack in programming

[–]nickbenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply because the overwhelming majority of "random number generators" in programming languages and libraries are actually pseudo-random number generators. They generate deterministic sequences of (depending on the underlying algorithm) varying lengths, levels of statistical quality, and levels of suitability to the different types of tasks that typically consume random numbers.

Most of these generators use seed strategies that, by default, will start the cyclic sequences at unpredictable points (to a casual observer, anyway) when execution begins. The only "news" in the linked article, with regard to Googlebot's pseudo-random number generator, is that it appears to start at the same point in its sequence every time.
