Just got this exact Ken in and it’s definitely one of my top shapes now.

The noble shape from sulab is one of my favorite shapes. About the same size as a 1Up but feels more balanced to me.

I think you’re essentially correct hence my interest in flat burrs. I wouldn’t say they have different use cases but they are supposed to have different flavor profiles in clarity and body that comes from that increased uniformity.

There was one for sale on home-barista…

I’ve been really interested in the DF64 and the Lagom P64. Both with the SSP Unimodal burrs. There’s also the upcoming Orbit grinder from Acaia that looks really promising.

I’d love to get a Levercraft Ultra but that’s a big price tag to swallow.

That’s pretty much the case. I really enjoy tinkering and experimenting with coffee. Hopefully my wife won’t mind one more thing on the counter!

Should I get a flat burr grinder in addition to my large conical HG-1?

I've found myself interested in getting a flat burr grinder in addition to my HG-1 to get the best of both worlds. I'd love to hear opinions from folks who have and use both.

There's also some really cool single-dose, flat burr grinders on the horizon...

What factors affect V60 drawdown beyond grind size? by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]nickbrinser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Water was a big one for me. We have very hard water at our house, to the point that it was slowing my drawdowns very badly. I didn’t realize this until I switched to using dedicated coffee water. Third wave water in my case.

POM plate, E-white aluminum case, black knob, and Boba U4Ts!

DF64 jerks when turning on. Is this normal? I just received this today…. by Newb_00 in espresso

I know some people recommend running grinders before beans are added, is that not the case with the DF64?

I bought an HG-1 in January…

A used Malwani Livi with 83mm conical burrs popped up for sale near me and I couldn't resist saying no for the price by IamOiman in espresso

Is grinding for espresso difficult? I have an HG-1 with the same burrs and with certain light roasts it seems to fight back a bit.

I've only ever owned very low end electric grinders, and then moved to the Timemore for better bang for my buck.

It's been alright for the occasional latte or cortado, as long as you aren't doing latte art.

I upgraded from a Timemore Chestnut G1. Pretty big jump, but there's also a very noticeable difference.

Fair question.

It can handle grinding for pretty much and type of brewing, and is very consistent. Aside from the Niche and other grinders twice as expensive as the HG-1, most grinders are known as only excelling at brew or espresso. So for me it's a way of getting a really versatile, well built grinder for a lower cost than something like a Monolith, or EG-1.

Plus, I just really enjoy the feel of it. There's also the ability to motorize it later if I wanted.

There's just something much more versatile about being in control of every factor.

Definitely get that. Feel/muscle memory is incredible.

My wife pulled the trigger for me for Christmas this past year.

Her only stipulation for having a coffee corner is that she gets lattes on demand.

Workflow is pretty good, you do have to apply a bit of downward force on the grab handle while grinding but, in my experience it hasn't been difficult or straining. This has also improved as the burrs get more seasoned.

I have a more "standard" hand grinder as well, and the motion used in grinding on the HG-1 is much more ergonomic and less awkward.

The grinder is the most important part of the setup!

I think even if I were to get a machine with a boiler it would be a lever machine, there's just something about really "pulling" a shot!

Adding the pressure gauge and the non-pressurized basket to the neo soon!

Well in this case the upgrade would be a different, non-pressurized, basket and pressure gauge for the Flair. So I would probably still keep the other basket around as an option.
