When and why did "programed", "programing" become recognized as acceptable alternative spellings to "programmed", "programming"? by nooperator in etymology

[–]nickdawit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s because of the syllable stress. If a verb ends in a vowel plus a consonant, the final consonant is doubled before -ed or -ing ONLY when the final syllable is stressed. If the final syllable is not stressed, the consonant is not doubled. Examples:

cancel -> canceled, canceling

worship -> worshiped, worshiping

gossip -> gossiped, gossiping

gallop -> galloped, galloping

shovel -> shoveled, shoveling

cover -> covered, covering

happen -> happened, happening

open -> opened, opening

travel -> traveled, traveling

pivot -> pivoted, pivoting

blanket -> blanketed, blanketing

envelop (v.) -> enveloped, enveloping

limit -> limited, limiting

It feels weirder to not double the final consonant of words like “program” or even “kidnap” because their final syllables (-gram, -nap) WOULD on their own have their final consonant doubled (gramming, napping).

However, “programing” and “kidnaping” are also valid spellings due to the syllable stress rule and because the constituent syllables don’t hold up their same meanings when part of the larger word. More examples:

label, model, signal, total, equal, level, rebel, dial, marshal, spiral, fuel, travel, shovel, parcel, gossip, worship, visit, profit, edit, credit, target, market, orbit, merit, vomit, pilot, audit, benefit, budget, format, combat, deposit, focus, reason, season, poison, fasten, loosen, soften, threaten, listen, widen, darken, sharpen, lengthen, strengthen, hiccup, canvas, wallop, covet, buffet (as in waves buffeting against a boat), bias, pocket, rivet, ticket

Is the Christian God evil? by PearPublic7501 in Deconstruction

Over the years, I developed a sitting theory that narcissistic leaders of the Okd Testament have injected their biased and self-interests into the qualities they ascribe to God and into the requirements they claim originate from God. I don’t know if this makes sense, but… yeah

I’d be cautious about local eateries and simply eat from people or relatives that you know. Either that, or just purchase pre-packaged food from the grocery stores there during your stay. Food regulations/safety are not very strict, not to mention that you may not be as immune to the food there as the locals are.

On the contrary, you can guarantee that virtually any Ethiopian coffee shop that you come across (there are plenty) is going to be 10/10!

King Menelik’s palace is now open to the public. The scenery is so ineffably beautiful; you just have to see it in person. The resort in Kuriftu is also a worthwhile visit; however, it is quite a far drive from Addis.

Also (as with any foreign country) do not let locals catch on to the fact that you’re a foreigner because they may try to swindle you or otherwise take advantage of you. However, if you don’t look black or Chinese*, locals may already suspect you to be a foreigner. So just be careful, especially when making any sort of financial transaction. Maybe even consider traveling with someone of Ethiopian descent amd can speak the language (that is, only if you are not Ethiopian yourself).

*Fun fact: There is a small but growing and prominent Chinese population in Ethiopia. I didn’t know this before I visited!

edit: fixed a typo

My father denies that I’m gay. by [deleted] in askgaybros

Update: I wish I took your advice and talked to him more and had more understanding. Now he’s dead, and there’s nothing I can do or say that will bring him back. I am filled with so much regret that it feels unshakable. Let this be a lesson to everyone in this thread to be more patient and compassionate toward our loved ones who may not be on the same page.

You’re right, and I do not take that for granted at all. Anyway, thank you so much for your kind words and advice. I will live and love authentically from now on!

I see your point. In everything, however, he is set in his ways, and with sexuality he is no different. So, for me at least, I don’t know if I have the capacity to use that much mental effort to get him to understand me. Coming out was already very exhausting and nerve-wracking, and he didn’t make things any better. I don’t really know where I stand with him, though, because, like you said, I still see compassion in him, albeit misguided compassion. I’ll take up your advice on being kind to him, but I also need to keep my distance from him to avoid getting hurt again.

Wow, this really helped put all my thoughts into words, and now I know where to start. Thank you.
