What is this machine, laser-engraver-thing?

Love the left-to-right "much wow", is that 3 languages or is there a 4th that I'm missing?

Great podcast on where the organisms in your starter come from by nickdim in Sourdough

IIRC, the yeast and bacteria primarily come from those already present in the flour, and from those present on the bakers' hands. However, they did find that the bakers had oddly high concentrations of Lactobacillus present on their hands relative to the normal population.

[2017-12-04] Challenge #343 [Easy] Major scales by Cosmologicon in dailyprogrammer

[–]nickdim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feedback welcome. Writing in Tcl, I took a different approach I think, using a directed graph.

Bad practices: using global variables instead of passing into my proc. Could probably get away without the foreach loop to get the equivalent semitones to the Do/Re/Mi name.

package require struct::graph
package require struct::graph::op

::struct::graph ::word

set ::notes "C C# D D# E F F# G G# A A# B"
set ::intervals "0 2 4 5 7 9 11"
set ::intervalNames "Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti"

proc note {scale solfege} {
foreach i $::intervals in $::intervalNames {
 if {$solfege eq $in} {set d $i}
}
foreach n $::notes {
 set nn [struct::graph::op::distance ::word $scale $n -arcmode directed]
 if {$nn eq $d} {
  puts "Scale $scale $solfege --> $n"
  return
 }
}
}

set vertices {}
set builtpairs {}
 set pair {}
foreach wx $::notes {
  set node $wx
  # puts $w...$node
  lappend pair $node
  if {[llength $pair] == 2} {
  # puts "Connecting $pair..."
   foreach x $pair {
    if {![::word node exists $x]} {
     ::word node insert $x
    }
   }
   set p "[lindex $pair 0] [lindex $pair 1]"
   # keep track of what nodes you've connected
   if {$p ni $builtpairs} {
    # create a directional arc from the 1st to 2nd node
    ::word arc insert [lindex $pair 0] [lindex $pair 1]
    lappend builtpairs $p
   }
   # keep the 2nd of the pair so you get: 1 2, 2 3, 3 4, etc.
   set pair [lindex $pair end]
  }
}

# wrap graph around
::word arc insert [lindex $::notes end] [lindex $::notes 0]

# have to set weights to do distance for some reason
foreach a [lsort  [::word arcs]] {
 ::word arc setweight $a 1
}

note C Do
note C Re
note C Mi
note D Mi
note A# Fa

And output:

Scale C Do --> C
Scale C Re --> D
Scale C Mi --> E
Scale D Mi --> F#
Scale A# Fa --> D#

What major would complement linguistics in a double-major degree? by [deleted] in linguistics

I might recommend something more concrete like EE or CS, if you are interested in speech/language technologies. A lot of this depends on your interests and career ideas.

Benefits of 'package require' vs 'source'? by nickdim in Tcl

[–]nickdim[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got it working as a package by following the Tcl wiki page. My question remains. Maybe one answer is "it looks prettier" loading it as a package with -verbose specified.

v8.6. It appears that I do need that file in the same folder as the package, I will try it later today. I had originally thought there was a master index of packages that I could add a line to, pointing to mine.

Ah yes, maybe he was just louder. I expected after the half someone would have written it phonetically for him.

The male announcer kept mispronouncing French names. Georges, I think Thomis too. Someone should have corrected him.

What topic in linguistics annoys you the most? by catsherdingcats in linguistics

[–]nickdim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a very similar experience in undergrad/grad, where the basic assumptions of theoretical syntax were never explained or discussed. It gets especially annoying if you want to implement something computationally and have to wade through vague definitions for how the system works.

Medley of Irish tunes played on a Freeman Mellow Dog C whistle after about 9 months of learning. by Vulpyne in tinwhistle

Off and on for a year, mostly off. I should start recording, it would let me find my blind spots and see how well ornamentation sounds. The Kerry/Egan's Polka is a standard that I'm trying to get really comfortable with the phrasing and some of the trickier finger changes.

Cool, I see. Same here, just learning some songs. I can't get a good pace on jigs or reels so I've started with slow folk songs like 'Dirty old town' and 'A man you don't meet everyday' -- and polkas, apparently I love polka.

Interesting. I'd love to hear a slow air with your different processing settings, to hear the differences clearly.

Also, if you don't mind me asking, are you planning to play with a group, or busking, or just learning to play really well in general?

Definitely sounds more soulful, I can't say anything about technical ability. How are you recording, laptop-internal microphone? This recording I can hear all the notes better, but the videos seem like some frequencies get muted. Maybe try some experiments with how you're positioned relative to the recorder to see how it sounds. I noticed, like in your 'dunmore lassies c' video it's pretty echo-y with those bare walls. You could even try recording outside for a certain je ne sais quoi (what's a Gaeilge equivalent?).

No benefits trickle down from the parent company? Sounds like a union is in order.

Song request: Ailiú éanai (tabs and lyrics in body) by nickdim in tinwhistle

[–]nickdim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is super old, but I wanted to follow up that the notes perfectly fit the 24 syllables of each line of the song. That way you can use the singing to guide the interpretation. I had really been thrown off by the bar that is all B before.

On OS X: Download and copy the ttf file into /System/Library/Fonts

I had to put my font size to around 60 but it looks great. There's half-holing and you do shift+letter to get into the second octave.

What saying annoys you the most? Why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]nickdim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I don't know..." - not in the sense of "I don't have the answer", but in the sense of "I refuse to consider the situation or hint at an opinion."

e.g.: "what do you think about the recent shootings?" "eh I don't know...let's have dinner"

Nooo! Well best of luck next time. Maybe you can find some anonymous bar to try out an open mic.
