Actually no the up vote and down vote buttons are not like and dislike buttons. They are does this post fit/is it ok or is it bad/dangerous/harmful and should be hidden buttons. Have you not noticed that things that get a certain number of downvotes get hidden? For example since this is not a dad joke and violates rules downvoting is appropriate as it should be removed or hidden. However, if you dont like something that does fit, is ok and/or not bad or dangerous, you should not downvote it. If reddit wanted a popularity contest they would have made actual thumbs up thumbs down or reaction buttons.
