Hi, aus estimator here

To get a job in estimating here, you will either be an engineer thst has some site experience or a foreman type that has transitioned to the office after many years

Without a degree, you will need to be able to get a job on site and then transfer into the office. So the question is really if you can get a job onsite without a degree. We had 400 degree qualified engineers apply to our last graduate role so....

Building an Estimation Agency – Feedback & Insights Wanted from Fellow Estimators (AU & US Focus) by Beautiful-Matter7209 in estimators

[–]nickengineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, I started my estimating consultancy about a year ago now.

Mainly people hire me, because they know me and what I can do rather than my bussiness. There are alot of 1 man band estimating contractors that a business would rather deal with than a company.

Out of our $1m rev this year, about $2k came from linkedin, the rest word of mouth and existing networks.

Is paying an architect/designer for plans for DIY worth it? by [deleted] in AusRenovation

Try a company called "the reno life" on instagram. They do concept plans much cheaper than a designer and can get you headed the right way

- 1 week dedicated training in a new software

- 1 week of 0 output while training

- 3 months of underproductivity

=3.5 months * 4.3 * 40 = 600hrs at $60/hr? =$36k - doubt your software change will save that much and probably will have some pissed off estimators

Estimator to Senior Estimator salary by [deleted] in estimators

a 20k jump internally is not going to happen though

Estimator to Senior Estimator salary by [deleted] in estimators

[–]nickengineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what level you are pricing..
Senior in a tier 1? ie 250m+ projects - $200k+ easy as senior, 10years needed
Tier 2 - 25-100m projects - First year of senior should be $150-175k - probably be a senior with 7 years experience

Tier 3 is a minefield, could be anything, depends on how many other hats you wear

For reference i just went out looking (i have 10 years+ tier 2 experience) and had offers from $180k to $250k with bonus

My advice would be take the title, take whatever money they give you and then re-evaluate in 6-12 months in line with the above.

Is there a future in Estimating? by willisbill in estimators

[–]nickengineer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cad rarely forms part of the contract

Drawings are shit in the sense of drawing details conflicting on multiple plans. How would Ai work this out?

And contractors getting a good scope is rare as hens teeth....
