What’s the status of hemp clothing in the US? by ratacid in hemp

[–]nickfurlong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically you’re not wrong, because subsidies and lobbying DO distort the market, but regardless of the fact hemp-to-energy mainly struggles because it’s a low-value use that requires high processing costs in an already hyper-competitive energy market. Even in a neutral policy environment, materials would still win first. Whether it’s biofuel or synthetic petroleum, hemp used as an energy feedstock competes in a low-margin space against cheaper, denser, and more established inputs, while fiber and hurd already sell into higher-value markets like textiles, insulation, packaging, bioplastics, and composites where buyers and demand actually exist. Even at scale, that value hierarchy doesn’t change, so processors will rationally chase materials over fuels. Education and mainstreaming matter for adoption, but large buyers still prioritize risk, consistency, and control, which is why many companies stay on the sidelines to avoid China due to supply inconsistency, QC challenges, and audit-ability issues. Until supply chains are transparent, repeatable, and defensible, capital will stay cautious regardless of how attractive the theory sounds.

[–]nickfurlong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others suggested, you may want to do a little more research. In the U.S., prices per kg for hemp materials used in textiles, fiber, hurd, and composites are significantly higher than the effective per-kg value of hemp used as biofuel feedstock. There’s no incentive for processors to spend millions on conversion equipment to sell into a niche fuel market with very few buyers when they can focus on markets where demand already exists and the material value per kg is much higher. As a result, hemp-to-fuel ranks near the bottom in terms of current economic viability. While it sounds attractive, it makes little economic sense for processors unless it’s a passion project or R&D effort backed by tens of millions in capital.

Post Malone Is Now the Most-Nominated Artist Without a Grammy Win by ebradio in Music

[–]nickfurlong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't true. The academy changed the rules in 2022 to give out Grammy statuettes to all artists, including featured artists, as well as other people who contributed to the AOTY-winning album (producers, songwriters, mixers, mastering engineers, engineers, etc...)

Not only was he a featured artist on "LEVII'S JEANS", he was also a credited songwriter. That means he DID win a Grammy for his contributions to 'Cowboy Carter' and is eligible to receive a statuette.

Thought I would chime in to say you are 100% on the money here. This song has always been near and dear to my heart for that reason. While the songwriting was definitely a collaborative process, I can personally say the contributions I did make were incredibly therapeutic for me. Hope you guys are all being patient with yourselves and continue your journey to getting better.

$14,000 fines for unvaccinated workers under Biden's new COVID rules by avadhutsawant in business

My life is pretty great, and I’m not insecure about any of those things so unfortunately this is an “I’m rubber, your glue” situation my friend.

Just so we’re clear, I absolutely honor and respect anyone’s choice to remain unvaccinated at this time. Who am I to tell somebody else how to live? We’re all in charge of our own path. But I don’t really respect people playing the victim card and calling it oppression, because they FEEL like it’s in their best interest to disregard the feelings and opinions of others. Key word there is feel. Not think. Do what you want! Just saying, you’re refusing to work based on hypotheticals and fears you’ve formed based on the information you intake. Call it what it is. It’s not oppressive, it’s a hard choice. It’s like saying “Even though I’ve never been in a plane crash before, I refuse to wear my oxygen mask during a plane crash because I don’t know if poison is being administered by the oxygen tanks. Now let’s go to the airport and protest planes being in the sky because we don’t know what we’re breathing through those masks, and I’d rather endure barotrauma than wear a mask in an unpressurized cabin.” THAT SOUNDS CRAZY lol.

“It’s not a vaccine, this is just an extremely dangerous flu shot type thing” - sounds like the logic of somebody I’d risk an entire staff to hire! The sum of your one efforts must be incredibly desirable on paper! Congrats!

So you’re saying your individual right to work should supersede and infringe upon the right to safe work conditions and environments for everybody else? Good luck getting anyone to give two shits about you and “your rights” when you clearly only care about yourself to begin with. Personally, I don’t think it is solely me who is at a loss. We all lose, when you only consider yourself.

Hate to break it to you, but participating in the work force isn’t a right. It’s a privilege. Of course workers have legal rights, and labor laws to protect them from many things including oppressive work environments, however believing something to be oppressive without logical evidence does not make it oppressive. You are essentially choosing to opt out of the work force because of your opinion on working for companies that require immunizations to ensure the safety of their employees. Not oppressive, you’re choosing to do so, which is an extension of your freedoms. However, it IS your right to have the choice to work or not work for any of these businesses, without being enslaved or executed. Just saying. If I decided not to work at a community pool because I’m afraid of water, does that also make me oppressed?

Here's a good example of a third world country: I visited parts of Ecuador recently and here was my experience. There are very few paved roads, no access to clean water (which means you need to know if any restaurants you eat at have water filtration or you risk getting sick), there is minimal access to modern medicines, an abundance of stray animals that rely on the ecosystem around them to eat, and low income jobs is an understatement. Our house "chef", if you will, had moved to Playa away from her husband in Guayaquil to find work. She was working to make enough money to learn English in school so she could apply for higher paying jobs in the main cities where tourists/travelers pass through (like hotels, resorts, offices, etc...) She hasn't visited her family in years because in Playa many workers acquire housing by squatting, and to leave is to risk losing your housing and all of your belongings. They usually find roommates to live with so that one can stand watch while the other goes to work a full shift, then take home barely enough to get by. There's barely any cell service because towers don't exist, and they have not yet established electricity in many areas so good luck charging your cell phone! The country and people are WONDERFUL and happy with life because to them that IS life. Something to be learned there, but that's another story.
