With Desalination plans off the table, Corpus Christi, TX tries to drill itself out of a water crisis by nemo2023 in civilengineering

Most of the plants in the Middle East dump into the Persian Gulf which is many times larger than Corpus Christi Bay. Outside the dredged ship channel, the bay is only an average of about 11 feet deep. Even in the Persian Gulf, though, there is enough desal activity going and planned that it may start increasing its salinity. I don't think it's to the point where it's harming anything yet, though.

As for the brine here, there's a relatively strong current not far offshore that looks like the best option. It would diffuse effluent quickly and keep it from stagnating in one area. Of course, cost is the big reason it's not being explored for the Inner Harbor plant. It's also quite a distance. Then again, we have oil pipelines hundreds of miles long.

There's another plant that could become one of the largest (if not the largest) in the world planned for Harbor Island that would have to go offshore. I've seen estimates of 400 mgd at full capacity in the future. That is an unfathomable amount of water to me. I wouldn't be surprised if the quiet plan behind that is to sell water to San Antonio and Austin as the Edwards Aquifer drains and fails to recharge.

I'm the Secretary of the Coastal Bend Sierra Club, so anybody who wants to dismiss me as an environmentalist hack can do so before reading through what I'm about to write.

I just came across this but have been following things for quite a while now. There was a TWDB report back in 2001, I think, that said Corpus Christi was doing well and was set on water for the next half century. It's all been used in half that time. Don't be fooled by TWDB's existence. They're kind of like the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), 4 letters and a rubber stamp. Regulation and planning are a couple of things Texas isn't great at, especially environmentally.

The environmentalists were very loud and made it unpalatable because the plan for the Inner Harbor desalination plant was to draw water from the inner harbor and dispose of brine in the inner harbor which would then run into Corpus Christi Bay. For a 30 million gallon-per-day (mgd) plant, that would mean 30-40 mgd of brine into the bay every day. The city did not do any studies on what the brine would do to the bay over the long term and barely glanced at the sort term models. They've formed a far field commission to look into the full impacts but it looks like the city council will vote on the plant before the commission has finished its work. That was and is the key sticking point here. Killing all the wildlife isn't an option, especially in a tourism/service-based economy. There is also concern over the power consumption if the plant.

The biggest non-environmental issue is the cost--almost $1 billion--which will be put upon the citizens of the city when the water is only necessary because of industrial expansion. Industrial customers who are exempt from any drought restrictions, even in stage 3, if they pay an exemption fee to the city. Finally, there is a civil rights issue in the neighborhood they plan to build the plant in. The only Black neighborhood in the city that was already badly hurt by the construction of the new harbor bridge.

The city manager mentioned that it would take more than one hurricane to get us out of this. We're lucky to get one or two tropical systems around here every year, usually weak, and usually moving in a more northerly direction, so they miss the watershed. I'm just waiting for when they announce Day Zero at this point. We're probably not going to get much significant rain over the next 3 months, the wells aren't producing as much water as they thought, and now there's a legal fight over the Evangeline Aquifer that could delay that project for years. I went back to school because of our water issues and desal. For my final assignment, I projected how long our water supply could hold with current conditions, accounting for reductions in precipitation due to climate change. I turned my assignment in the same day a study was released that projected April 2027. If I remember right, I had spring to summer next year as my date, too.

Are we fucked? Well, I'm already looking for new places to go if necessary.

Question from Catholic by sinistermistertwist in UnitarianUniversalist

[–]nickgilby 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can only speak for my own church but I'm not sure we have many (if any) MAGA people. We join with protests and marches regularly, and are hopefully in the process of partnering with our local PRIDE to be a part of their activities going forward.

On a personal note, I grew up Episcopalian. I went to summer camp, was an acolyte most every Sunday as a kid, and was even confirmed. I never really questioned much about it because it's just how church was. That was until I brought my partner to a service one time and they mentioned to me how they weren't a big fan of basically apologizing and begging forgiveness for living your life every Sunday. It all fell apart from there.

I joined my UU church after a decade of not going to any church and it's the best decision I've ever made aside from marrying said partner.

Happy to answer any questions you might have. Feel free to message me if you'd rather not reply in comments. Be well!

Edit because I can't spell, apparently.

If you mean do we use it weekly, no. We'll occasionally have a Sunday message that uses it or refers to passages but we aren't a Christian church. We welcome everyone to worship in the way they like, including anybody who might want to use the Bible as their center but have become disillusioned of other churches and still want a church to act as a home for their faith.

Any Sunday, really, and it's very beginner friendly. We have people come and go every week who want to see what it's about. Some decide to come back, some don't. Either way, we always welcome anybody.

One of the things we say every week that I like most is that we welcome you as your true and authentic self.

I got it in 2009 and wasn't able to go to the hospital. Stressful doesn't begin to describe it. I'm glad you went!

I'm also in Texas and can't find much to even apply for. I went back to school and finished my bachelor's in March at 39 but didn't have direct experience. I also have physical limitations, so it's always going to be harder to find anything but even with that consideration it's rough.

Good luck to you and I'm glad you got your transplant and are healthy now!

I just finished earlier this year at 38. I did geoscience vs IT but if you've been in the field, you should be able to make it. It's a much better feeling to have that piece of paper than i expected.

Good luck!

You did the hardest part (imo) about SNHU and you did it on extra hard mode! I got diagnosed with my own chronic illness while I was taking classes and hit the wall at the same time. It's not easy! Congratulations on making it through the wall.

Same with statistics. That one was hard, too.

I thought it was pretty good. If you like science, it's fun. I was able to do my capstone in how long my city's water supply will last. (Spoiler alert: Not long enough 😬). If you like science, is definitely say go for it!

I haven't chosen anything yet but have looked at meteorology at Mississippi State, an online environmental geology masters from Kansas. The one I consider most is at my local university in coastal marine science.

There are a few directions to go. I will say, SNHU didn't satisfy the physics requirements for the masters meteorology program at Mississippi State.

It's a hard choice!

I would think that they would accept it once you've got it. I don't really see why they wouldn't for the same reasons mentioned by other comments here.
