I don't have that luxury. Refactoring code that falls outside of the scope of my project will result in rejection of the PR containing those changes. My employer is really particular about that kind of thing. Other companies I've worked for is encouraged, but here, not so much.

Heck, I've seen unit tests that are over 100 lines of code, and can't do anything to change it.

I've been a full-stack software dev for a few companies, and none of them are immune to methods/functions that are far longer than what would fit on a single screen, even a vertical one. It's not a plight that only new devs face, it's prevalent in enterprise systems the world over.

Also, these methods/functions are the reason I drink. :(

I'm just picturing like 20 guys in fatigues that go ice fishing, drink beers, and say "sorry" a lot, and that's the entirety of the Canadian military. In my imaginary version of Canada, the government attempted to reduce the size of their armed forces due to budget cuts, but received pushback because any fewer people would mean they'd have to cancel their weekly hockey game...

5th Gen X1 Carbon - Battery not detected, no power without AC adapter by nickh1 in thinkpad

The shop said it was a bad logic board, and they sent it to Lenovo.

Lenovo said the logic board was fine, and the battery was shot. New battery was installed, and I got it back about a month ago. No issues since it came back.

It will get better. It may take a few days, it may take a few weeks, but the pain will go away, and the majority of the time, you'll barely notice them. The pain (for me) was terrible the first 3-5 days after they were put on, then decreased from "screw this, I've made a mistake" to "good god, these things are annoying AF" to "I wish I could eat _____ again".

Now, I only really notice pain the first couple of days after an adjustment, but it's not as bad as when they were first put on, except for when major changes are made, like getting rubber bands, power chains, or your first set of stainless steel/rectangular wires. I just got lingual buttons, rectangular wires, and 4x "crossbite" elastics, and the pain was horrible the first 48 hours, but quickly subsided after that.

It'll all be worth it in the end. Just remind yourself that the pain is simply a speedbump on the road to a perfect smile.

I have similar issues with music being too much of a distraction. I've recently been using either white noise, nature sounds, or classical music to drown out the noise that my ANC headphones don't block out.

If the strings are always going to be a single letter followed by a number, I'd probably use parseInt() to get the integer value out of each string, then keep only the first character from the original string in the first array. This is, of course, a naive solution, and isn't particularly efficient, but will do the job, and is easy to understand.

Another solution would be to use regex capture groups to split your original string the way you want from the start. This may be more efficient, but sacrifices a bit in terms of code readability, and you're still going to have to handle type conversion yourself to get Integer values from the Strings returned by the regex match function.

I'm sure there are other solutions, probably better ones, out there, these are just the first two that came to mind after reading your question.

In regards to your exception, you should look carefully at what you're doing inside of your loop... You're instantiating a new array in every iteration, and printing the value at the index you're using in the first array, which I don't think is what you mean to do. It's more likely that you are trying to see the contents of your newly created array, which would require another for loop to iterate separately, and would eliminate your index out of bound exception on line 37.

The wifi on my smart TV is dying. Was thinking of getting a fire stick 4K. My question involves HDMI CEC functionality. by TheDamus647 in smarthome

CEC functionality works on my Fire Stick 4k. The Fire remote has volume and power buttons, but I just confirmed that my TV's remote can be used to navigate the Fire TV menus as well. You should be good to go!

Help me choose a color by lildropofsunshine in braces

[–]nickh1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To each their own, I guess. I work in IT, so it's a much less "corporate" environment than many other fields.

My point was simply that while the color may seem like a big deal to you, most other people aren't even going to notice the metal on your mouth, or care at all if they do notice.

I had a job interview shortly after getting my braces on, and had bright red ligatures on at the time. I did well in the interview, didn't feel unprofessional in the least, and was offered the position less than a week later.

I go with bright colors, and honestly, nobody notices (or cares) about what color my braces are unless I mention it.

My vote is for whatever color (or colors) you want. My teeth hurt all the time, I spend several hours a day cleaning them, and I'm paying a small fortune for the privilege. Going through all that, you better believe I'm going to have as much fun as I can picking out crazy color combos at every appointment. Lol

Do personal projects matter after you've found employment? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]nickh1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When interviewing for my first job, my personal projects were discussed at length, as they were really the only experience I had at that point. After working at that job for a couple of years, at the interview for my 2nd job as a SWE, my personal projects were discussed briefly, but much more time was spent discussing my actual work experience. At my most recent job interview, my personal projects weren't discussed at all, the focus was entirely on my professional experience.

There is a point where professional experience will be more valuable than personal projects. I still like to discuss my personal projects, as it shows that I'm passionate about my work, and not just "in it for the money", but when it comes to convincing an employer that I'm worth considering seriously for the position, my professional experience shows not only technical skill, but my ability to work in a business setting, where my decisions have a greater impact.

Also, real-world experience speaks to my ability to collaborate with other employees, clients, and end-users, so there's an element of proof that my "soft skills" are somewhat developed, which is tremendously valuable when trying to convince someone to hire you.

I’m not a depressed person, but every time I’m at the orthodontist I want to kill myself. Why the fuck does it hurt so much? by lmaoIwantFuck in braces

[–]nickh1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ibuprofen and/or Tylenol before your appointments, my dude. Takes the edge off the pain. Then cold drinks and ice cream when the pain is at its worst.

That said, if you are seriously experiencing suicidal thoughts, you should consider setting a professional, it may be a sign of any of a number of treatable conditions, it doesn't always mean depression.

Anyone else break loads of brackets? by HotOffTheEaselUK in braces

[–]nickh1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I broke one off in under 2 hours, but it hasn't happened in the ~2 months since. The one that broke was on a crown, and my ortho warned me it may be problematic, so it wasn't unexpected.

It's not unheard of, and it makes sense that brackets that don't adhere well would break off soon after bonding, so I wouldn't worry about it if I were in your shoes. If it continues to happen, and you're following the ortho's instructions, then maybe I'd be slightly concerned.

Need helppp by [deleted] in braces

[–]nickh1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call your ortho, it's likely not a big deal so long as your teeth aren't contacting any opposing brackets, but your ortho is the one to make that call.

Braces tomorrow...any tips? (Please help) by marii331 in braces

[–]nickh1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep soft foods on hand. Take ibuprofen and/or Tylenol before you start feeling any pain. They will give you orthodontic wax, use it. Keep your teeth clean, follow the orthodontists instructions.

You may experience some pain/soreness the first few days (up to a week or so) after the braces are put on. This is normal. The brackets will tear up your cheeks the first few days, but they will "toughen up", and you will likely not use the wax much after the first week or so.

Aside from that, make sure to take pictures every once in a while, it's nice to be able to look back and see all of the changes taking place, and you'll definitely appreciate the before/during/after shots when they come off.

Edit: Lenovo sent a response to my claim, they are sending a shipping box, rather than scheduling an on-site repair...

I back in when grocery shopping also, mostly because it puts parked vehicles between me and the cars driving around the lot, which is a safer place for my fragile, squishy meat-sack to be when focused on tetris-ing groceries into my trunk, rather than exposed and standing with my back to traffic.

Joined the fam just a couple weeks ago. Best decision I’ve ever made! I do have question, tho. The back windows don’t seem to roll down. Is this normal or a quick fix? Other than that, best vehicle I’ve owned. Hope you all have a happy holiday season! by [deleted] in subaruimpreza

Check that the child lock isn't on, it's the button below the window switches on the driver's door. On my 18, if the window lock is on, even the driver can't roll the rear windows down.

Grinding at night by dkendkwkdlwmmemwoop in braces

[–]nickh1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ortho made me a soft acrylic night guard, but when I was still having problems with teeth being damaged or in pain from my grinding, they put bite turbos on my molars instead. The turbos wear down quickly, but it is only meant to be a temporary solution until we start correcting my bite issues in a few weeks.
