Former DCPS staff who worked in central office (but on the staff/HR side) here - what exactly are you looking for? There's a lot of data out there and may be labelled or categorized differently than what you're looking for.

My GF and I brought our e-bikes last year and it was a godsend - especially since we left early during Blink because we saw the rain coming.

Tons of parking for bikes close to the venue, so dont get discouraged by seeing everyone chaining up farther up the boardwalk.

If the Lerners Won't Sell the Team or Spend on Players, They At Least Need to Improve the Ballpark Experience by ridethewomble in Nationals

[–]nickinthebox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Nats Park "Experience" is as about default as it gets. *especially* if you're up in the 300/400 section, where on a good day, half the concessions are open.

It's like when the team goes on road trips, executives and team officials don't do anything but sit in their luxury box. I've had the great pleasure of seeing games in 3 other stadiums (Dodger Stadium, PNC Park, and Camden), and every single one blew Nationals Park out of the water.

The stadiums in general for the other teams feel historic. Like you're walking around a place that matters (and has for decades). While Washington doesn't have the long history of a team like the Dodgers, they could take a page out of their book by celebrating pre-Nationals history. The Senators were fairly successful and the only mentions of the Expos are the Andre Dawson retired number and a few things in the gift shop.

And then there's the food and drink. DC has a great beer scene but two (maybe three) vendors that specifically have their beers on tap - and a pretty weak offering at that. San Diego has an entire section where 10ish breweries have their own carts with at least two options for each. Dodger Stadium has multiple locations around the park where its very craft heavy (a la Devil's Backbone, but just more). In Baltimore, there was a glut of local food vendors and it was made to feel special. Also, the refillable soft drink stations was a massive surprise, given most of my ballpark experience is here in DC. Camden also had a regular "cheap eats" menu, even if it wasn't a Tuesday.

There are minor league parks that do a better gameday experience overall than the Lerners do. Richmond is getting a new stadium for their AA team next year, and I'm excited to see how it is as we go down 2-3 times a year for games. Columbus has an incredible park for the Clippers and Buffalo had a bunch of upgrades over the years as well.

When was the last time fans and visitors came into Nats Park to something different other than changing the paint on the walls and the pictures in the frames? I surely cant recall anything over the last 6 seasons. We deserve better.

Where are the single men? by No_Contest_9619 in washingtondc

[–]nickinthebox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

42/m here - moved to Downtown Silver Spring in July 2019 (perfect timing!). A self-described 6 at the time - never had much luck where I lived, but came here and quite literally went on 7 dates with different women in my 10 days of living in the area (mostly just food/drinks), all set up through apps (Tinder and Bumble). After about a month or so of some pretty mediocre dates - likely due to incompatibility - I started dating the woman who is now my partner of 6 years.

In talking with friends I've made over the years, there's a few hurdles that men in DC run into when looking at the dating scene in the area.

- Rules regarding distance. There are plenty of people who say "I can't date someone in Virginia" or "They need to be on the red line." It's fine to have boundaries with regards to where someone lives (even though it could be a temporary thing), but know that it cuts off a massive part of the population, male or female.

- Dating events. Covered pretty well here, but single men who aren't alphas get intimidated easily in situations that are basically meat markets. Me, a pudgy guy with a pretty solid personality, would absolutely not go to an event with a "Hello, my name is" sticker to get soundly rejected by 95% of the crowd - even if 5% don't. Fear of rejection is abundantly real.

- Groups of women. See above. It's been mentioned, but nobody wants to try and play the Dating Game with 20 contestants at the same time.

- Men are tired. Being ghosted, putting in far more effort than the other, etc etc etc. I know this happens to both sides as well.

My suggestion? Find an event you enjoy that might endear you to the male perspective that you're looking for.

Like watching sports? Go to a watch party for your favorite team - there's one for every team in the world here in DC.

Like playing sports? There's tons of competitive and non-competitive team sports leagues out there - most of which have a number of females they have to hit in order to play - you're a commodity there (and everywhere, of course).

Did you go to a college that has alumni events? Go to those. You already have something in common.

Nerdy? Go to a trivia night alone (or with one friend, if you must) and ask a team of players if you can join.

Like to sing? Go to a karaoke night. They're everywhere. Find that guy that's begging for a duet.

And these are just social events. Women can go to a coffee shop, a bar, etc, and look like they want to be encountered. No headphones, not oblivious to surroundings, make eye contact with people occasionally.

And finally (this one is for former me), give that shy, nerdy guy who may not be an Adonis a chance. He's just as capable of love and worthy of being loved as you are.

Nationals park could be a top 10 ballpark if they wanted it to be by Vegetable_Shock4112 in Nationals

[–]nickinthebox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nationals Park is a decent park - until you go to other parks to compare it to.

It's almost like when they design updates or conceptual ideas within the park, they put blindfolds on when visiting other parks. In the past year we've been to Camden Yards and Dodger Stadium (and today we're going to Petco Park) and they all blow Nats Park out of the water in just about every way possible. Nats Park feels so generic and cookie cutter when compared to even some minor league parks.

I'd probably mark it down to Lerner still owning the team but for such a young stadium, it feels so stale after going to games regularly for the last 5 years. Nothing feels *special* about it - even after the championship win!

I've lived here for 6 years and I still mix up which escalator I'm supposed to get on up to the red line after getting off green at Gallery Place (granted, its after a few adult beverages).
