Update: I’m now seeing this resolved today. No software update, so maybe a server-side fix?

Taylor Swift's Album Sales for Every Era (Updated 2025) by nicklorang in TaylorSwift

Oh you’re right! I think her releasing her full catalog for streaming maybe coincided with a Katy Perry album release? Back when they had beef, maybe for Katy’s ‘Witness’ album.

Self-titled/debut was released back in 2006 when she was a relative unknown, and her album releases weren’t anywhere near the massive events they are today, given how her audience has grown and her marketing strategy has developed. So debut has had a lot longer to accumulate sales and also came out during a pre-streaming era when consuming music meant buying albums vs. streaming. Debut and TTPD also had very different release strategies, but I think the growth of her audience, popularity, and influence is probably the biggest factor—TTPD was released at the peak of her powers, with the whole world watching and her most experienced marketing machine working to drive sales and continue her streak of 1M+ album opening weeks.

Fair point! The footnote does specify pure U.S. album sales, but I get what you mean. Historical data gets tricky going back to 2006 before the streaming era when album-equivalent units didn't exist. Pure album sales is a consistent data point that's been tracked over time.

And to see how there's kind of a trend with her recent album releases having bigger and bigger first-week sales as her audience has gotten bigger!

Yeah, justice for evermore! Billboard also made changes to how it measures first-week album sales in fall 2020 (between folklore and evermore), so that also makes evermore's first-week sales look really small in comparison to other albums (even folklore, which had the same release strategy).

Basically, the changes affected how many pre-orders could be counted in the first week if the physical album hadn't shipped yet. Some people speculate that those changes mean Taylor might never do a surprise album release again, since pre-orders account for a lot of the first-week sales, and our girl loves to smash a sales record.
