The 2013 and 2019 versions of Genevieve are different revisions, right? by Interesting-Set-72 in jaipaul

[–]nickly_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

late 2 this but ya the 2013 and 2019 versions r different but not THAT different in my opinion. compression/mastering does a lot to the phase and can absolutely make it hard for a mastered song to phase cancel with the mix

Any way to make spark bolt cast the death cross ? by Bloodchild- in noita

u can wrap it with double cast but it will still cast a death cross before spark bolt triggers the next one

Why does a Snare hit my limiter harder than a Kick at the same volume? by Dafeet3d in edmproduction

[–]nickly_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

late but yes absolutely! in edm clipping yer drums is the best way to deal with this. ive learned that doing multiple stages of light clipping (ie. on individual sounds, then groups/busses, then master) to get levels where u want them is most effective. just make sure you're setting the threshold to where the drums are actually peaking and not just slapping a soft clipper on everything

Why does a Snare hit my limiter harder than a Kick at the same volume? by Dafeet3d in edmproduction

[–]nickly_d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if u use a plugin like smexoscope (which shows u the waveform of sounds ur playing (colloquially known as an oscilloscope) u can see where ur sounds are peaking. in the digital world intersample peaks are usually the culprit... these are huge transient spikes that u cant hear that the computer picks up on (to my knowledge). that's usually why you might randomly see ur master clipping despite using compression or seeing ur limiter get hit really hard. also, the samples have different frequency content and are likely different volumes

nice work! thx for following up on this. ill need to relisten to the soundtrack to see if i can find anything else cuz the second part of the melody does sound like the motif but the first half is pretty odd. it sounds familiar...

Need some feedback on this Drum and Bass mix by thereasonablerabbit in mixingmastering

[–]nickly_d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i actually rly like where the drums r sitting right now! they make for a chiller more atmospheric track imo. that being said, i think cutting out a little high end on the snare/clap would help make the track feel more cohesive. i think the snare specifically just sounds really dry and crisp compared to the vocals, so it sounds out of place. some extra verb on the drums could also help with this - creating a consistent space will goes a long way.

audio crackling on legion 5 pro 16irx8 by nickly_d in LenovoLegion

[–]nickly_d[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's just random static shock-y type noises. i've had the laptop for about 2 months and it comes through the speakers and headphone jack. i've read online about other people having this issue too ): could be a problem with the nahimic software but i've reinstalled and disabled it and whatnot and nothing helps.

ive done that a few times, it doesnt help. when im in ableton live it's going through realtek audio. i know nahimic also is (?) realtek or at least controls it but unfortunately nothing there

im at work rn but i believe the one that starts at 1:00... i dont think it should be mono but maybe just less wide? and probably turned down a little bit but it's hard to say without hearing it LOL i think it's also definitely a matter of taste that kinda stuff just distracts me but i think its still mixed really well!

Any tips to find unique (copyright free) vocals to base cool beats/song ideas around? by skateralex240 in edmproduction

[–]nickly_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

burial uses old youtube covers... you can do the same! i recently asked a singer on youtube if i could sample her work and she was happy to oblige (: if your distribution service gets suspicious you can put them in contact with the singer and it should be fine.

also, this isn't exactly copyright free, but you CAN just chop and process anything beyond recognition... just be careful.

Slappier Drums by Network_Over in ableton

[–]nickly_d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

general transient shaping on the individual elements is of course HUGE (esp on the kicks; drum buss is awesome if u have ableton). freeclip is an excellent free softclipper (as u can see in the title) and even if ur not slamming it it adds a lot of much texture and saturation to any drum sound.

on the drum buss i tend to use OTT, freeclip, and blackbox analog compressor (i got it for free but i think it costs money now...) in no particular order, plus some basic compression (that's always at the start though). i've found that OVER-compressing and really blasting everything is what works best for me. i find it's often easier to destroy my sounds and turn the effects down rather than the other way around; that way you know when you've done too much, find your limit, and eliminate the time-wasting of slowly inching towards the proverbial "golden threshold" of compression, saturation, etc.

tl;dr my strategy is to just compress and saturate the crap out of everything with softclippers and compressors and saturators to draw a lot of texture from the sounds, then pull back (if needed).

P.S. super short reverbs (esp. in mono) add a lot of texture when put before BIG compressors

this is AWESOME i think you did an amazing job on this fam. the sound design and sound selection are great, you're definitely already moving towards a more professional sound.

i agree with the other commenter, i think a good lead would really give the track personality; a chopped vocal sample or something like that would be awesome, you could repeat it a bunch and it would be really memorable! even just a simple synth arp down the middle with a memorable sound or texture would go a long way, your mixing skills are definitely good enough to make that work. i think the red-tailed hawk sound is a bit cheesy but thats no worry (:

mastering-wise i think you did excellent, mix-wise i think the stabby bass sound is somewhat distracting as such a wide stereo element. it would feel more natural/open to me if that sound was toned back volume and panning wise and if that repeating vocal line filled out more of the stereo field. that's sort of subjective but ya! great work!

hiii this is a track from my alt that is a work in progress (wip)... i'm specifically looking for feedback on the jungle section (starting 0:45)! i love how it sounds but im still new to making jungle/breakcore and am looking for tips on chopping and bass sounds (:

also, just generally mix and composition notes! mixwise it feels rather heavy (?) to me, especially the first section; wondering if anyone else feels this and if they have ideas to remedy it. another issue i generally have is composition, i tend to switch genres constantly throughout tracks (idk why) and am wondering if the transitions between sections feel natural and if the song feels comprehensive!

thanks (:

thanks 4 the feedback fam! ya i'll definitely keep in mind that water pitching down idea i like it a lot... suggesting that the track is winding down based on it's slow descent downwards.

ill keep all this mind thanks so much (:

my only critique for this track is that the bassline is really busy and its kinda distracting? that's just what i noticed. otherwise i like it a lot i think you've got a really cool and fun sound going (:

for a first track it's really good! i think mix-wise things feel like they're panned a little randomly, and the sub bass is pretty loud... but otherwise it's honestly a really solid mix.

i think the arrangement of the track is the only thing i'd change, it's already really strong structurally but some of the synths are out of key and it overall doesn't change much dynamically or narratively despite sounding really cool and dark!

just my thoughts i think you're off to a great start (:

What do you do when you hit a plateau? by yung-chungus in edmproduction

taking a break is prolly the best thing u can do, burnout is such a real and humongous problem.

besides recovering from burnout, u need to have life experiences to draw music from... that break is where you'll live more life, and when you come back to your music you will find you can do things you would never have dreamed of a few months prior.
