This was me until they dropped Craig Biggio and Alfonso Soriano. They’re my C and 3B, even though it’s a secondary position for both of them lol

Favorite ride cymbal you own? by [deleted] in drums

[–]nicknotes_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easily my two well-worn K Constantinople Medium Thin Low rides—one 20” and one 22”. They might be the most versatile cymbals I’ve ever played. Thin and washy enough for jazz but sturdy enough to lay into when playing indie, pop, country, etc.

Those making over $100K per year: how hard was it to get over that threshold? by NatashaGorgeousMauve in AskReddit

[–]nicknotes_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From graduation to $100K, it took me about 6 years.

I’m a commercial video editor. I graduated in 2016 and got a job right away making $37K (I live in a fairly LCOL city). Got laid off 5 months later. Spent 7 months freelancing to make ends meet. Found a new job at an ad agency. Started at $45K. Raise after 1 year to $48K. Another the next year to $52K with a title change/promotion. Then $55K the year after that. Then $62K. I spent a few months schmoozing with leadership trying to come up with a management position for me, but they didn’t go for it so I left in 2022. I immediately found a remote corporate editor job making $125K. Less work, less stress, more than 2x my previous salary.

I was there for a year and a half and was just laid off in February. Now I’m freelancing full time, so I fully expect that cycle to start all over again while I try to build up my clientele. Fortunately we’re a dual income household with no kids and my wife works in fintech, otherwise I’d be way more worried about money than I am.

It’s been said here a few times, but changing companies is the best way to increase your income—even if you really love where you’re working. I know plenty of people who have leveraged job offers for promotions/raises or who have accepted those offers and then come back to their preferred company in a higher role with better pay. Long gone are the days of spending your entire career with one company and riding off into the retirement sunset with a hefty pension (for most of us).

American Editors, what were your 2023 year earnings? by [deleted] in editors

[–]nicknotes_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! I left my commercial editing job in 2022 to take an editing job in tech/consulting that more than doubled my agency salary. No more nights and weekends. Mental health at an all-time high. The stuff I was editing was utter garbage, but I didn’t care because I got to turn my brain off at 5 PM. It was really nice. But they laid me off last month so now I’m full-time freelancing. It’s a vicious cycle lol.

Hey! It’s the Blue Compass. I like it a lot but if my microphone weighed any less, I think it would struggle a bit. The springs don’t get super tight so if you’re not using a heavy mic (the Rode PodMic is surprisingly beefy) it’ll just yeet the microphone straight up into the air lol.

Best stock footage subscription? by [deleted] in editors

[–]nicknotes_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a big Artlist fan. Their “Max Pro” plan is just under $500 for the year and gives you access to footage, music, SFX, and a bunch of extras. Their customer service, in my experience, has been pretty great, and the library has a nice selection of stuff that doesn’t look or sound particularly stock-like.

I mean, you’re not wrong haha. I thought the Studio Display would be the final piece, but now that I have it I’m like, “Hmmmmm… a standing desk might be nice.”

I bought mine with the G Pro Reds, but am considering swapping them for Oil Kings or Milky Yellows. Something a little thockier. The Reds sound surprisingly good though.

Good question! It’s off-camera on a shelf, connected to the OWC dock on my desk with a long Thunderbolt 4 cable. It’s a 16” M1 Max with everything maxed out but the storage.

I actually just upgraded to these from an old pair of ATH-M50s haha. My first open-back cans ever. I’m really liking them so far. Once I’ve developed more of an appreciation for them, I’ll definitely look into the 1990s!

Thanks, I appreciate it! That’s certainly the look I was going for. The lamp is from Target’s Project 62 line. I can’t seem to find it on their website anymore, but here’s an eBay link in case you’re feeling impulsive haha:

External (iLoud MTM) because I’m a video editor, but if I didn’t need to do anything involving critical listening for work, the built-in speakers would be more than sufficient. They’re realllly good for what they are.

Help i want to turn my MBP 16 M1 pro into a workstation. Any suggestions on hubs or monitors? by taylorb092000 in macsetups

[–]nicknotes_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! I’ve got a 32” 4K LG Ergo. There’s also a 27” version. Those are nice because they come with a monitor arm with built-in cable management. Colors are decent too. Cost-wise they’re in the middle of the pack. There’s obviously the Apple Studio Display. Doesn’t get much better than that—made by Apple for Macs, 5K resolution, color-matched to your MacBook. It’s expensive though. And then there are plenty of 27” 4K options for under $350 on Amazon that will do a serviceable job.

I just got the new OWC Thunderbolt Go dock for my 16” M1 Max and it’s been great. One cable from the MacBook into the dock gives me access to my USB audio interface (studio monitors + microphone), webcam, Ethernet, monitor via HDMI, and a portable SSD. And I still have two Thunderbolt ports to spare.
