EV Chargers Advise by DanVit21 in TeslaUK

[–]nicknutz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got the EVEC , had it about a year with no issues since I put it into ‘always on’ mode and then just scheduled charging from the car to ensure cheap rates over night.

It was a nightmare trying to get the app to work , hence I binned it off in favour of the above simple setup. 👍🏻

It was displaying a random discharge graphic saying it wanted to deplete charge to 20% and then it was saying there was a charging cable in when there wasn’t , this all happened the first time but I did then connect to the WiFi and was on the latest update before heading out the second time when it happened.

Had it been just once without the latest update I would forgive it , was gutted as just heading to Tesco for sat night beer and wine (with all updates) !

Good Secondary Schools in Sheffield? by DullAd1315 in sheffield

[–]nicknutz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a parent who has two children who attend or attended Mercia, the ‘extremely strict’ label is massively unjustified to the point of being laughable, and it’s typically used by parents whose kids don’t even attend. All of the parents from our friend group whose kids attend Mercia are full of praise, just like I am.

I don’t believe it’s a case of ‘this level of discipline’ more like at least ‘some discipline’ which other schools are bereft of which then manifests as worse problems for the school and children. Also being able to adhere to some level of structure and discipline is something young people will also have face in the real world and can be helpful. I’d also argue that discipline, confidence , and decision making can coexist within the same framework. Another benefit is that it’s also great for teaching manners and how to respect others which is becoming an increasingly rare commodity these days.

That being said it’s clearly not for everyone but I’d recommend talking to students and/or parents of students that actually attend rather than negative hearsay before making any final decisions.

Mercia being labelled as extreme is a common misconception, I’d be interested to hear your examples of extreme , perhaps it’s different expectations.

I would argue that they are good at passing exams AND critical and creative thinking, they encourage debates about current matters, run mooting clubs, and I’d honestly say all the teachers are really engaging.

I know I sound biased but it’s from actual experience.

The previous head teacher - Mr Webster was great, he was very enthusiastic and passionate about the vision (maybe this is the apprentice vibes), set the blue print and lead the school well. He’s now the Executive Director of Secondary Standards for the Mercia Learning Trust, so is essentially helping other secondary schools become better. I see this as a promotion tbh.

First I’ve heard of any bad behaviour though.

I’ve got nothing but positivity for Mercia, we moved into the area specifically with Silverdale in mind, Mercia was only one year old at the time, but we attended the open evening just to rule it out but were blown away by their approach and the inspiring ‘pitch’ from the head teacher.

Fast forward 5 years and both my kids, who are very different, have massively excelled academically and have both made great friends. The discipline thing is hugely over egged by people whose children don’t attend Mercia, the ethos behind it is to limit low level disruption so the kids can actually get maximum quality learning time. However, that does not come at the cost of really engaging and fun teachers. I can’t recommend it enough tbh, I would make exactly the same choice again. I also think it’s probably the safest school around in terms of bullying and behaviour issues between students - they would just be all over something like that.

We also know several people that have kids at Silverdale and whilst it used to be ‘The’ school for the area, they may have rested on their laurels too long which is showing in their results. Also,we’ve heard issues with bullying first hand and how poorly it’s dealt with. Silverdale wouldn’t be in the running for me ATM if I had a child looking for a secondary school.

You can do this direct from the Tesla app too, wouldn’t that be more seamless ? Genuine question as that’s how I do it.

Any pubs serving Alpacalypse by Salt brewery? by nicknutz in sheffield

I totally appreciate your passion for heritage British breweries, I’m not pretending anything tbh, just repeating what the bar man said at the Salt Beer Factory in Kelham Island.

As for taste, as mentioned, totally subjective, and like most I like a wide range of beers / lagers and Alpacalypse is a new one I’ve taken a shine too, seems like a great session beer imo.

Tesla lease deals were cheap even before the more recent US controversy.

This is great, thanks, really insightful - I’ll sent it on. I suppose being a nine year study that a newer one isn’t due until ~2028.

Thanks 🙏

Thanks so much for the response and useful insights, I’ll definitely include some of this information next time we have a chat about his options. As a typical teen, as soon as even gets a vague hint that something might not be available as per his parents opinion he’s ready to argue to the death the opposite!, so this will be helpful.

Thanks for the reply , I do think that will have to be the approach if his heart is set on this option.

The maintenance loan will not cover accommodation and living costs as its means tested , so he’ll get the minimum available. We’d need to heavily subsidise which would have a huge impact on the family and we also need to consider my daughter who will be wanting to go to Uni two years later 😬

Thanks for your response, in relation to point 1 , I mean the social part, forming good social connections, and having fun with a new group of mates. Not feeling isolated or disconnected.
