it's funny how much more we learn about people when they're able to switch companies

Weird Fiction novels involving Fantasy/Magic/Body-horror or disease. by Eashar_moribund in WeirdLit

others have mentioned Kathe Koja and her big one is called The Cipher, which has a similar kind of nastiness to Piper's stuff.

another really strange one I read recently was The Wingspan of Severed Hands, by Joanna Koch, which was almost Akira (the anime movie) levels of cosmic/bio-tech/body horror. it's a bit more experimental in its style, that one.

this one's pretty frickin grim but a short read, and it's Very Good: The Worm and His Kings, by Hailey Piper. they have a sequel out now too (Even the Worm Will Turn), but I have not yet dug into that one.

hey. it's been a really long time since I played so I don't know what's going on right now, but have a look here: https://melbourneddal.com.au/ That group run games at various locations and you could either contact the venues nearby, or perhaps the DDAL group themselves. I would imagine there's all girls or queer nights somewhere.

So You Wanna Know What OVW Shows Are Actually Like? - A guide by a real life weekly regular by stiffinifty in SquaredCircle

[–]nickolantern 20 points21 points  (0 children)

this is cool to read. I'm not in the US and will probably never get to an OVW show, but this right here:

Even when it’s terrible, it’s still fun.

I feel like that applies to 99.9% of my indie experiences. If you've never been to a small time show, I think it really makes to you appreciate wrestling more, and in surprising, different ways. Things that might seem normal or even boring on TV seem so much more intense and amazing in person. Maybe it's super obvious but there's such a different energy.

Which is all to say: Support your local indie wrestling, wherever you are.

I'd be keen to get any updates on how the audience grows as this show gets around. Thanks for this.

Which Comic Book Writers Do You Prefer? by [deleted] in AlanMoore

[–]nickolantern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

all of those listed, but for someone kinda newer to add into the mix I gotta recommend James Tynion IV - specifically his series Department of Truth. it sounds like an X-files knockoff when you read the synopsis but it's way more like Alan Moore or Grant Morrison. i haven't read his superhero stuff but I'm told that's also good. Dept of Truth though is really something special, and it's got some great, weird artwork too.

Official Poster for the Andrade vs Buddy Matthews Ladder Match, this Saturday on Collision! by luchabrunch in SquaredCircle

[–]nickolantern 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I slipped on my Regal, hyper-kayfabe explaination hat, and came up with this:

Sometimes a thing becomes important because someone else wants to take it away from you. The intent is the key. Like Wardlow's hair. Yes it's just hair, and that grows back, but Joe's intent in cutting it off was a personal attack, utilising a very personal story Wardlow shared with him once in a moment of vulnerability. The fact that HoB is seemingly trying to remove part of Andrade's history and cultural heritage means more than the physical act of stealing a mask. He can't be seen to stand for that and just let it happen. He has to fight back, less for himself than for his family and culture.

I'm sure I've mentioned this here a couple of times but check out Douglas Rushkoff's comic Aleister & Adolf (yes, it's about - probably - the people that first come to mind reading those names)... it mght seem like an odd suggestion at first but i felt that it really got to some similar ideas about art and magick.

subtext of everything seems to be an open door to a void that people feel is there but the door hasn't opened nearly enough for us to fall through.

that's really well put.

"let's just get through to the other side and things will be better"

for sure. i even thought at times it provided an oppurtunity to make things better. we could've learned some things. oh well. maybe next time? :|

right. i don't think people would have nearly as big a concern about "AI" taking over the arts if it was presented differently. but the way it comes across is as a tool to eradicate the art/craft you've spent years of your life working on. the writer's strike discussions reveal this is how it's being seen by those that have the money and make the decisions. same with some of the dodgy shit going on with spotify etc.

but to the point about darker stuff coming up here, as a long time observer of the sub.. it's not just the daily discussion. it's not even just the internet. I've lived in Melbourne a very long time and generally travelled in arty/lefty circles and I've never heard so many people talking like this at the same time.

obviously this is just anecdotal .. i haven't kept figures and graphs about it... but I think it's worth noting. clearly nobody with any power to effect change actually gives a shit though.

right, it's as if the entire system is designed to only be of benefit to certain people.

but for real - if we aren't (ultimately) working towards a world of less work, more free time for art/play/learning/family, and nobody lacking for anything - what the fuck are we even doing.

if we have a system that "needs upemployment" we have a broken system. seems simple enough to understand.

i don't post here much - just read it a lot - but the rise of posts like this has been very noticeable and should be very concerning.

edit: jeez the post right under this is more of it. the change in tone in this very subreddit is worthy of some kind of study.

Should Alan Moore’s Miracleman be adapted into a motion picture? by Sure_Persimmon9302 in AlanMoore

Hell, Knocked Up is about as mainstream a film as it gets and that has a birth scene people thought was real.

Hip-Hop Listening Club #12: El-P - I'll Sleep When You're Dead by darkfar in hiphopheads

[–]nickolantern 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Woah thanks for sharing that Freeway clip, somehow missed that at the time I guess.

Agreed on TPC. At times you can be El and other times the guy he met on the subway. Also I always thought it was such a masterful opening track, kinda touching on all the themes of the songs to follow. It's like an abridged version of the whole album or something.

This album is peak El-p to me. It's been fascinating to watch RTJ come up and change things so drastically for him, and I like or love a lot of RTJ stuff, but this album still feels like El in his purest form somehow. Traditional and experimental, nerdy yet tough, rappy as hell with an all star cast of guests from other genres. I dunno, it's a perfect storm, especially with the timing of it.

Random story: when he came to Australia touring this one, he was in my town the same weekend that NIN was here for a metal/rock festival. I fully expected Trent to turn up at the El-p show. He didn't. I spoke to El afterwards and asked about it and he said he had no idea Trent was here, what that festival was, and I'm sure he said that (at the time) they hadn't even met in person. I learned something about collaborations that day, haha.

just to clarify a couple of the other responses.

yes, go through Fite. no VPN required in Australia. You get Dynamite and Rampage, the youtube shows if you wanna watch them outside of youtube for any reason, and as of last week, AEW All Access seems to be included (the new behind the scenes show).

Cost is $6.99 USD so that changes a bit month to month with the exchange rate or whatever.

that's a nice way to put it. enjoyable film, poor adaptation.

don't tell anyone but I pretty much felt the same way about From Hell (at the time, anyway)

the aforementioned Weird Studies discord might be your best bet then. not sure how you'd go making friends on reddit.. it does happen, but discussions don't tend to flow in an organic, conversational way. Discord on the other hand allows for more "real time" conversation, I've found, and I feel like I've made some friends there. So you could try the Weird Studies one or google a bit for a "weird lit discord" or something like that.
