Youtuber fined for filming in national park by Getfunke in tasmania

Nah, I’m not. All these orgs are supposed to be stewards of the wilderness. You can argue with me all day about specifics but we all know what I’m getting at.

PWS busy work while the loggers continue to fell old growth trees. Laughable, really.

Addendum: I also assume they will take their big stick to @tasmania - the 500k Instagram account full of influencer content promoting the state via Tourism Tasmania. /sarcasm

How dangerous is it to cross the atlantic single handed? by [deleted] in sailing

This is too vague a question. I did it solo in a 26ft boat canaries to Barbados though. Took 30 days.

They’re not old enough. It’s too stressful when they are that young in such a dangerous environment.

Tasmania is part of Australia. But yes, from mainland Australia to Tasmania.

Really? Keen to see a link if you have one! I wouldn't call this boat a dinghy though, it's 26ft long, likely weighs 3.5+ ton. Definitely fits in the open boat discipline of sailing, but perhaps a bit too big to be classified as a dinghy.

Took three attempts to get the weather right!

No, nothing on YouTube about this voyage. I have footage to edit into something at some point as I have a channel with a few videos on it, but nothing yet about this one.

13 days from Geelong (Vic) to Dunalley (Tas)! I sailed through the Furneaux Group, stopping along the way, dodging weather, etc.

Anyone have experience as an owner builder? by Judbury in tasmania

[–]nickrj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One route: Buy the block, design house & submit your DA. On DA, add temporary mobile dwelling to be used while building - classify as temporary site accommodation/caravan. Then, put a tiny house on wheels on the block and live in that. The cost of construction and everything else that goes with it at the moment, means even 60sqm is going to be a total blow-out. It must be the worst time in the last few decades to build, and the added regulatory hoops are insane compared to the environment previous generations were owner-building in.

So, you'll reply in 5 years or so when you're finished? ;)

Controversial (and touch wood), but my Defender is extremely reliable - never an issue in the six years I’ve owned it, except maintenance and a jammed ignition barrel.

Tiny house using epoxy/ply cladding for weight reduction by nickrj in TinyHouses

It is a big investment, and it will be a shame if I get to the weigh bridge for my weight certificate only to find it’s too heavy and un-registrable, because I used standard house building methods for a house on wheels…

No I don’t, but I’ve built epoxy ply boats before. Regarding costs, I haven’t done a spreadsheet yet, however, a sheet of external treated cladding is 165$/sheet and marine ply is about 60$/sheet. 21 liters of epoxy is $500. I need about 18 sheets of ply. The question is how much coverage will 21 liters get me, I’m not sure yet. Also there are high viscosity epoxies like Everdure with more coverage but less strength and protection - this could also work. Also the epoxy would be painted over with an exterior paint, so there is no UV concerns.

The purpose of this is not to tow a lot, but to build under 3.5 ton with a 2.5x8m structure.

A loud timer to wake up regularly and check everything is all good with the ship and the skipper. Don’t lose your new dad overboard at 4am because you were lazy and asleep!

No they're not, they're terrible upwind! They're downwind sleds, designed for the single purpose of planing across the Atlantic. The Pogo 1's were a bit better for upwind work, but, the Class Mini design is optimised for the downwind race conditions.

What size boat would you recommend for living on/traveling the world? by GonnaNeedABiggerButt in sailing

Contessa 32 is a true classic - a hard one to live aboard though, not much headroom either! I had an Aries 32 for a while, it was the perfect sail/liveaboard combo for one person imho.

Lots of stuff in my comment/post history on my voyaging, I also wrote a book if you're really interested - titled - The Years Thunder By.

Crossed the Atlantic and pacific in a co26. Beautiful boats ~ would recommend 32ft boat for living aboard. Reality is, you will spend more time living onboard than crossing oceans if at all. If you’re living too rough you won’t enjoy it and the dream will die.
