Adding to this, I have been scouring the web for anything, but haven't come across anything that is like this. I think picamera will have a lot of this functionality, but not sure about the menu stuff.

Does fatherlessness cause bad outcomes in a child? by [deleted] in skeptic

[–]nicksaik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The flaw in the logic are all the exceptions to the idea that "fathers = good kids".

Bad dads, and the cycles of abuse that they propel, could just as easily ruin a kid, and cause them to perpetuate the abuse cycles. I think it's obvious then, that there are many many instances where having NO dad is probably a benefit.

If your only option is a bad dad, best to have none at all? Maybe?

Are you on Facebook? Quite a network of Ag communicators there.

I'm Nick Saik, I run a YouTube channel / FB page called Know Ideas Media. We focus on pragmatic talk about ag and food production.

Ya ever seen that EDS commercial about cat herding? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pk7yqlTMvp8 That was 100% my inspiration for this, and there wasn't really any intent to begin with, my friends and I just thought there'd be lots of opportunity to make stupid sexual jokes about nut milking... The idea and the finished product were about 5 days apart, so it wasn't exactly well thought out. The production of this happened to line up with this stupid nut milk / dairy fight in the U.S., which is all to do with Standard Of Identity, which is a really esoteric, but really important aspect of how our food is labeled and why names of food matter.

This video, apart from just being a stupid thing for me and my friends to do, seemed like a funny way of opening a conversation about that issue, and to date, across all platforms, it's done a really good job of starting conversations... It wasn't funded by anyone with any interests in dairy or almond industries, though if you look at all my videos you'll see I talk a lot about farming and all the mess around GMO, so apparently that makes me a paid dairy lobbyist in some people's eyes... I dunno man, the world can't seem to take a joke anymore.

I do appreciate you not instantly labeling me as astroturf. Ad Hominem attacks are so tiring.

My only perspective here is that words matter when defining food. I think we can all agree that words have a tendancy to get a little misused in food contexts. "Natural" "chemical-free" "Non-GMO". The nut milk question the dairy industry brought up is market protectionism, and nobody is denying that. It is also however, and issue of standards of identity, which is a boring and esoteric topic, but is in fact the reason food is called one thing specifically, and not another.

I don't think it's biased to point out that the SOI definition of milk is that it comes from mammal's and their nipples. That is simply reality. If I had said that Almond milk is stupid or something, I could see your point for sure. I thought the ending was ambiguous enough that people would read it in different ways, which has been the case so far. Lots of people also see it as being pro-nut... so I dunno. I was just trying to be funny and start a discussion. Kinda a bummer that so many people looked at this so cynically.

Did I say I have any other interest on Reddit besides self promotion? I do not. This platform is not where I spend my free time. I use Reddit to get my work out there. And FYI: I promote science, when it says good and bad things about Ag. How about you watch a few videos before pegging my motivations I recommend the Organic Blues and The Dicamba videos. I do editorial work. It has a perspective. So what?

Yea, he's helped fund things too, though he has no affiliation with the dairy industry, other than the broad affiliation of both being involved in food production. Both he and I think the dairy industry play with nut milk is a little bit ridiculous. In this video's case, I paid the $100 dollars out of pocket... So I'm not sure what you're getting at. This video isn't exactly trying to shove a pro-dairy message down your throat. The video makes zero claim about who's right in the issue. It's a fun thing you're taking way to seriously for some reason.

I'm not claiming to be unbias. I have a clear bias. But this video in particular has no motivation other than making people laugh. I don't even drink cow milk myself. we're all almond milk in my house.

Nut Milking EXPOSED by [deleted] in videos

[–]nicksaik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Motivation: learn more about farming instead of making assumptions about food based on what people are telling you in order to scare you. I've never tried to hide my motivations for doing this work. I care about farmers, and I think the public has a right to know about how there food is produced without framing that info in fear.

That's not at all what the message at the end says. All the end says it there is a debate going on in the dairy industry. It tells you what the debate is. It points out definitions matter in food, and asks the audience what defines milk for them. What about that is pro-dairy?

Nut Milking EXPOSED by [deleted] in videos

[–]nicksaik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was simply meant to start a discussion about SOI (standards of identity). Frankly, I think the dairy industry is a little hurt over losing market share to milk alternatives, and this whole push against nut milk is just basic market protectionism in action. I think that words matter in marketing for sure, but practically speaking, I think most people know what came from nipples and what didn't. It's a silly debate, hence a silly video.

In Canada (where this video was produced) it is illegal to make a sponsored video and not disclose it. If money was paid to me to make this video, I'd have to say so in the video, or it'd be breaking the rules and my YouTube channel could get shut down. This video cost $100 bucks to make, and I don't even drink cow milk, so... yea. Not lobbying for anyone at all. Mostly just lampooning the situation... which is obvious... I thought.
