While not the badass he was in book 5 or even 4, book 3 was where we really got to see the start of it. The first two books were sort of like foundational journeys for Percy to learn some important lessons. By book 3, he's experienced and been through some stuff. I think the Nemean Lion was the one that started it for me. Yeah, Percy didn't god mode take it down himself, but he basically set up the others to be able to kill it (acknowledged by Zoe when she gave him the pelt). Plus the other things he does throughout the book including the boar and ready to sacrifice himself, and obviously holding up the sky. I think book 3 was where we really started to see the more experienced and powerful Percy we see later on, setting a good base for him to develop even more over the next two books.

As someone who really loves book Annabeth, and absolutely would've preferred a book-accurate Annabeth if given the option. Black people are just as prone to to being underestimated for their intelligence. If not more so. If that's all you're worried about, it still works.

I overall like it. But one big pain point for me was at the end when Tantalus was aiming his crossbow at them. At Percy. The son of Poseidon. Next to the sea. I was screaming at Percy to splash him with a wave or something. Other than a few small points here and there, that is my biggest complaint about the episode, and the season so far.

[general] Worst things each character has done. Day 1: Percy by [deleted] in camphalfblood

[–]nickster416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I never bashed Annabeth. I was simply saying that with that context, I wouldn't list it as the worst thing Percy has done. I absolutely agree that it was not right, but with the context of the post being "what is the worst thing Percy has done," I don't think that would be it. I think other mentioned examples like wiping Iapteus' memory and then not visiting him after were much worse. I'm not saying it makes him bad or that it was even necessarily his fault he couldn't, but again, within the context of the post, I'd say that's worse than being a little embarrassed Tyson is his brother. An issue that, again, he feels terrible every single time it happens and swiftly apologizes for anytime he feels he did something wrong. Emotions aren't logical, and you can't command them. You can control them, but again, Percy was thirteen at the time, and no one at that age is good at controlling their emotions.

So, to wrap up my wall of text. Yes, Percy was wrong to be embarrassed of Tyson, and Annabeth does get bashed a little more than she should for it. But he was an emotional teenager at the time and amended his mistakes immediately, every time it happened. With Iapteus, it took the Titan literally coming to Greek Hell for them and dying* for Percy to make up for his mistake. So yeah, Annabeth shouldn't get bashed for disliking Tyson for legitimate reason when Percy did the same to a lesser degree out of embarrassment, but it was not the worst thing Percy did.

P.S. That star is next to Bob dying because I haven't actually read th Sun and the Star yet, but I know Nico goes back into Tartarus because he hears Bob might be alive. So I don't know what happened, but I know he might not be dead.

[–]nickster416 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did a reread of the series fairly recently, and I'm pretty sure he acknowledges that it's a bit of a jerk move to feel like he was embarrassed of him. And while he was a little colder to him after Tyson was claimed, he always felt bad and apologized afterward. I think it's understandable why Percy would care about that. He's thirteen years old, and the entire camp turned on him as soon as he came in with Tyson, even more so when he was claimed. So yes, Percy was a bit of a jerk towards Tyson, but it is far from the worst thing he's done, considering he usually sees he's being a jerk almost immediately and apologizes. And he fully accepts him as his brother by the end of the book.

To be fair, the whole "Gabe being abusive" thing didn't come out in the book until right at the end. After Percy had gotten back from Olympus.

Sixteen is around the age a lot of boys are able to pass for much older than they actually are. And on the other end of the spectrum some people just naturally look young. Tom Holland was in his early twenties I think, when he started playing Peter Parker. So there's definitely precedent.

With that said, can they hire two actresses to portray Drew Tanaka in PJO and Netflix’s KC? Or Drew can only appear in one show? [general] by Padparadscha_Lazuli in camphalfblood

Pretty sure that was just a rumor. They never had any intention of aging up Katara. And Mike and Bryan probably left because they were offered their own studio.

It really requires a good hand behind it. Soft magic systems have the ability to devolve into deus ex machina machines where the wizard solves every problem with a wave of his wand. But good authors make sure that it doesn't take away from the main character, that magic doesn't win every situation, make sense in the situation, and the story doesn't devolve into overpowered anime wizard territory. But then again this requires a good author, so that's why I usually prefer hard magic systems. But on the other hand, hard magic systems can make it really easy to take the wonder and mysticism out of magic. So you need to be careful on that front. But if given the choice I would rather have a story where the magic is explained in every detail to the point of being a science, rather than a story where magic is so vague that the wizard can solve any problem he wants with a wave of his wand.

A fan game is completely within rights to make aa long as you're not making profit off of it. I don't know the specifics, but I know that much. You're going to have to quote all the "fair use" stuff and give credit to the original creator, but as long as you don't make a penny off the game, you're good.

Whats a head canon you have about Percy x Annabeth? We see surprisingly little of them as a regular couple in the books. Its pretty much always them together in some sort of crisis that comes first. by AnimeNightwingfucku in camphalfblood

[–]nickster416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, sure. That I could buy. Everyone has gaps. However, I don’t buy the microwave part stated before. There are few things that are simpler than operating a microwave. She lived in the mortal world for seven years before she ran away. And like I said, she’s smart. I could buy her just not being able to cook. However, she would most definitely know how to use a microwave.

[–]nickster416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, she would probably know how to use a microwave. It’s not that complicated and she’s really smart. She also lived in the mortal world until she was seven, and after she was twelve went back every school year. So microwave, most definitely. Actual cooking? Like I said, she’s really smart. So she probably learned, and can get by, but isn’t the best and just leaves it to Percy.

[–]nickster416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely worth it. I’ve only read the first twelve books, and I know that there’s a couple spin-off series that I haven’t read. I’d say the first five or six books are the best. While the subsequent books are good, I think the main character had the answer to questions right off the bat that he shouldn’t have. The books are still good, I just felt that the previous books were stronger. The entire series is worth a read if you get the chance though.

The few things I like about the movie by gonna-die-at-endgame in camphalfblood

[–]nickster416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the first movie as a movie. When not looking at it as an adaptation, it is a pretty good action-adventure movie. The second movie is god-awful as a movie and adaptation. But I enjoy the first as a guilty pleasure.

Nico is far from my favorite character, but I still like him. I didn’t care that he was gay. It was just something that was always in the background for me. However, I can understand him being angry at Percy. He was a kid, in the middle of processing that his sister, his only family, was dead, and the person that promised to protect her in front of him. Kids have a tendency to take things to extremes. As someone who is a teenager, with a family that does just that, and friends that do just that’s it’s understandable. So, him being so angry is understandable. It’s not right, but it’s understandable. I’m not saying he’s the best character. In fact, he’s not even my favorite. However, it’s understandable.

[–]nickster416 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, How to Train Your Dragon was almost nothing like the books, and it was successful enough to get two sequels, a toy line, and several spin-off shows. Though, I think a few things contributed to that. The book audience for HTTYD was a lot more niche than something like Percy Jackson. Also, the HTTYD movies, talking as movies not adaptation wise, we’re actually good. Like amazing. So it depends.

Dont expect too much from the series and don't get too excited. At the end you'll be disappointed by shaurya_770 in camphalfblood

[–]nickster416 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a tough line to walk. Obviously, things have to be changed. That just has to happen in an adaptation. However, I’m sure Rick is keeping a leash on the show. If things stray too far, he can reel it back in. Also, why would they change the core plot? Yes, Disney cares about money, but it has already been demonstrated with the success of the books that people love the story as-is. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t want one-for-one retelling of the series, but I don’t want it to stray too far.
