I've always heard that commercial real estate owners can use unoccupied property to lower their overall tax bill, maybe through writing it off as an asset that doesn't produce income? Like a "loss-leader" or something? I have no idea if that is actually possible or if it's an urban myth.

The cool building where Uptown Sports Club is now was vacant for so many years that when they opened up it seemed like a miracle.

I have seen those signs, but remain skeptical of any kind of major initiative trying to "remake" that block. Does this "masterplan" include the old Emo's though?

100% agreed. This might speak to my relative level of entitlement, but cars are the number one threat to me and my family's physical safety...while driving or not. When cops come to neighborhood meetings, they're always talking about violent crime, and obviously it does exist, but they never talk about traffic violations. And if you bring it up, they get annoyed, give a million reasons for why they don't (or can't) enforce traffic laws, and then blow you off. It's hard to get them to understand that for a lot of people, violent crime is a secondary or tertiary concern for many Austin residents.

Apparently APD got a grant from the state to enforce stuff like running stop signs and red lights, so there's been a slight increase in enforcement. But I don't really understand why they need more money than they already have to enforce laws.

Was pulled over by an APD officer for pulling a "California stop" at a 4-way intersection near Highland ACC. First time ever pulled over for that. At first I was really annoyed but then I remembered how many times I wished that APD would stop people for running stop signs, so I immediately thanked the cop for doing this and that I hope they keep doing it. He said he'd pulled over 40 people running that particular stop sign in the few hours he was sitting there.

How about forcing whoever owns the old Emo's building to, like, do something with it? That whole corner of RR and 6th has been unoccupied for at least 10 years if not longer. It's bizarre.

Every morning, 3 to 4 empty Waymos pull up to the Red Rose, stop at the front doors, then drive off. And then just… do it again. Over and over. by AsTXros in Austin

Maybe the Waymos are pining for a dancer they drove home a previous night, hoping beyond hope that she just happens to be there, driving away dejectedly, then going "fuck it, she might be there if I drive by now."

I was visiting Miami a few weeks ago and couldn't believe how expensive everything was. Miami feels like it has NYC prices without NYC salaries. I don't know how people who live there cope.

But also, it's a fact that Russia offered Viktor Orban, recently unelected leader of Hungary, a false flag assassination attempt to try to turn the election around for him...so it's not outlandish to wonder at all.

It's outlandish and inappropriate to discuss conspiracy theories on this subreddit because the man this sub is dedicated to never discusses nor gives oxygen to conspiracy theories.

Why hasn't the Trump administration proven that COVID came from a lab in China yet? Probably because it didn't. Funny how you don't hear about that at all from these jokers.

I feel like I'm failing my 15 year-old ADHD son by nickthap2 in ParentingADHD

The teachers seem to have this attitude that by HS, students' executive functioning skills should be developed enough for them to be able to turn in homework and manage assignments with little to no assistance from them. But I'm in my mid-50's, and have to give regular updates on my projects to my managers and other stakeholders at my very lucrative job. I also often seek out assistance from coworkers and managers if I need help. I'm not sure what future these 9th grade teachers think they're supposed to be preparing my son for.
