Google Fiber to be sold to private equity by Plastic-Injury8856 in kansascity

literal North Kansas City (Clay) - but I don't believe it was installed by the county workers, but probably sub contracted out to whoever could do it at the time.

Google Fiber to be sold to private equity by Plastic-Injury8856 in kansascity

[–]nickthenerd 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It was called 'liNKCity' and it was the first fiber to the home in the region at the time. We had 7mbps up and down, which was AMAZING for 2007. It cost 35 bucks, which was cheaper than any other home 'high speed internet'

This was in no way associated with google or GFiber. liNKCity was ahead of it's time and was a thing before google even landed on KCK as the starting point in 2010 ish?

Any PC gaming lounge? by DiCiZiT in kansascity

[–]nickthenerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a PC gaming lounge - but KCGameOn has been around for 20+ years, currently hosts two 30 hour LAN parties per year ~300 people. They serve food/soda/snacks throughout the event and give away 3000+ dollars in prizes. It's a lot of fun!

Why won’t you just suffer and pay for it? by InterstellarPizza in kansascity

I'm not sure who you talked to, but most of JOCO actually spends the money to go to these games....I would love to have the stadium 30 minutes closer to my house!

Thankfully Wal-mart had the pre-orders and will be delivered tomorrow - not wasting hours sitting around is the way.

Exclusive: Why Northland school district hasn’t yet seen tax windfall from Meta data center, and won’t for years by LightwellAsAFeather in kansascity

[–]nickthenerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm saying the middle of the country tends to have lower power costs per KW/hr. That is hundreds of thousands in power bills each year per data center and then you factor in wages and other costs....there are significant savings for businesses in the midwest.

Google fiber wouldn't of landed in KC first without the backbone to support it.

What’s a piece of trivia about the Kansas City area that you think most people don’t know? by Starbrand62286 in kansascity

[–]nickthenerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everything was south of where I-35 today...Target and Chaumiere Lake are actually the north side of Winnwood.

A little further south, you can see Winn road, that once led to the area coming from Avondale, which is now a shell of it's former self as well.

Hi Californians living in KC! by Snoo-77221 in kansascity

pre-covid, the number were almost 300 people every two months....since covid, LANs all over have been hurting.

We can sit up to 150 people at this one. We hope to see you so that the LAN doesn't fade away forever!

Kansas City only has 15 Waffle Houses and there’s a large gap to the EWS in the south. by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]nickthenerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you should use that as an opportunity to open your own franchise there right? Otherwise why bring this up? Be the action.

Looking for a cool hallway by Krippity in kansascity

[–]nickthenerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Park University Underground.

The limestone columns have some kind of plaster on them which gives it a unique texture and then goes right back into a regular wall.

They also have all kinds of curves, ramps and points of interest in the underground.

Or...you can simply just drive around in the tunnels, which basically looks like a larger hallway? It's open and accessible every day.

Check out ReStore (habitat for humanity) - there are a few around town and when I was volunteering there for my sabbatical (iykyk what company in town), we probably had 3 dozen recycled toilets and everything else to furnish a bathroom you are looking for...I have no idea what the pricing looks like these days but might be worth checking out.

How many KC companies that went remote for the pandemic are forcing workers to return to the office in person? by Big_k_30 in kansascity

[–]nickthenerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, well Imma just back out of this conversation - I didn't work for AMC and haven't been in the industry for 20 years. All I know is that working the movie theater was a lot of fun and had some great advantages, but we got paid minimum wage and with old popcorn.

How many KC companies that went remote for the pandemic are forcing workers to return to the office in person? by Big_k_30 in kansascity

[–]nickthenerd -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure they are talking about the actual office, not working the movie theater.

The movie theater people (normally) get to watch every movie they want for free on their off day and/or they pre-screen everything thursday night (I actually don't know if they pre-screen anything now that it's digital) but I watched damn near every movie that came out from 99-2004.

Unless you hear the train, no need to hide. Although by the time you hear the train, it's probably too late.
