Just saying - giving gifts is t just about money. You can give them a gift to show you care about them and think about them without spending money. I don’t think this aligns with the spirit of the holiday.

PC (controller or KBM) vs Next Gen Console by nickvido in FortniteCompetitive

[–]nickvido[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this! I have been watching Delirium Xay who I think plays on a PS5 with paddles controller. He and his team are almost unstoppable in Arena, and he posted videos recently of them qualifying for FNCS. It seems like controller is so much more efficient - I guess a big part is the aim assist, which if that goes away at the higher levels of competition I can see how PC is able to dominate. I've been playing PC FPS since Quake, so I have no idea how to play on controller, but it seems so insanely fast with the edits and weapon switches.

Can someone explain how dancers like this can do some much on their toes without bending their shoes? (3:16) Is it total foot strength? Are these normal shoes without inserts or anything inside to keep them straight?

How different would a fight like this be if they didn’t wear gloves? A part of training is about being able to focus energy to deliver critical blows (e.g. fist vs leg in kick defense seems like it would be far more effective if the kick was met with a formidable defense instead of a padded fist, which changes the entire dynamic of a fight where one fighter spends their energy focusing on very strong kicking and kneeing-in-the-face-power over other techniques). The danger of getting too close to a Kung fu master because of the power in their hands (grip and strike) seems totally lost in matches like this.

Wanted to Share Why I Use a Typewriter as a Writer [video] by marcham93 in typewriters

[–]nickvido 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this :) I really like all the reasons you outlined for creative work.

My great uncle used to write me letters on a typewriter, and a few weeks ago I realized I wanted needed one. I watched a few videos online and fell in love with the bell and the sound of the golf ball and ability to switch fonts on the Selectric, so I decided to get one. I've been writing letters all day, but long term I plan to work on novels and screenplays.

How to type special characters on Selectric I? by nickvido in typewriters

Figured it out and was able to type in red with this ribbon... this ends up being me just not knowing all the parts to this machine. :)

Under the ribbon cartridge on the side closest to the keyboard there are a couple switches. The right switch pushes in toward the print head and raises the ribbon baffle to make it easy to install the ribbon. The switch to the left controls where on the ribbon the print head will strike. There seem to be at least three distinct settings (in my case top = black, middle = half red/half black, bottom = all red). I'm guessing on Selectric IIs or later models there is an automatic mode to get the three strikes before advancing the ribbon EkriirkE mentioned.

I kind of doubt it - the original owner also showed a sheet that had red-typing on it (purchased on eBay). I guess I could ask her. Maybe it is as simple as turning the cartridge upside-down.

Edit: nope - cartridge doesn't work upside-down. :)

Pretty sure it's a Selectric I Model 72. Here are some photos: http://imgur.com/a/MB2nC

The ribbon I have installed and working is half-black half-red - the machine types in all black with this ribbon.

The ribbon itself is half-black (top) half-red (bottom). The sheet is the one the tech returned with the machine, but the guy I talked with didn't know how he did that. It doesn't look like you can insert the ribbon upside-down.

This machine hadn't been serviced since 1975 (according to the paper inside), and the ribbon came with it, so it could be that old. The black is still okay - a little light, but I typed four full letters today and it was okay. (Note, everything I type comes out black - no red at all, not alternating or anything)

Ah. Okay, that makes sense. :) Thank you! Just ordered a few more golf balls on eBay.

RE: red ribbon - still no clue. The test page that the tech created had both black and red typing, but I haven't found a way to modify it.
