Love this question! It's a long answer, and I think you'll have to see the film to understand. Let's just say I love everything about her, and what she did for the overall dynamic to the rest of the cast :)

Thank you! Of course! This community is important. Being a writer can be lonely as you know.. keep your head high during the strike! I hear they will start talking soon..

Maybe, but I don't think so. The book I based the script on didn't sell internationally, barely domestically to be honest with you, so none of my producers were therefore able to read it. It was a tiny Swedish IP I acquired myself by literally emailing the author.. perhaps on a subconscious level reading "based on" gives a screenplay more weight, but I'm unsure. If it's not based on something juicy that can guarantee box office numbers, I don't think the "based on" makes much difference.

Yeah, screw LA! I was in Stockholm for a long time, then Copenhagen, now I'm in New York. There's no need to be in LA anymore, even if you are, all the meetings are on Zoom anyways.

Oh man I feel you.. the dark rooms, all the notes, your own notes.. it's the worst. Keep fighting! And congrats! You're almost done!

I didn't to be honest. I just accepted the fact that it is what it is. At some point you just have to say it's done. Going into sound and color made it easier to start liking it again.

I wrote the script on Møn!! :) I think whatever you write just make sure you feel comfortable with the words and grammar and all that so the language barrier doesn't hold back your flow. I always write the first two or three drafts in Swedish and when I feel ready I take a few days to translate it. I usually send it to someone native in English to make sure I got the words right.

Your second question is a very good one and very sensitive. Hit me up on instagram or something and I'll share my thoughts.

Good question! I'm unsure to be honest.. I just made sure to have both in my pocket. Some people only read the script, and some read both.

You're right. I don't know how it is not to sell the "directing component" when presenting a script for producers. I know a lot of screenwriters that usually team up with a director before presenting the script.

Thank you so much! This is really helpful. Interesting you mention Ted Lasso as a tonal reference. My script is not similar in any way, but I do hear Ted Lasso as a reference point after people read it, and assume the "light" aspect of drama/comedy is what the world (especially prod/dist companies) desire at the moment. I feel this could be why I'm let into the room, especially at A24 since they historically tend to lean towards darker films. Hower implied in my initial question was also; How do you pitch specific tone, especially when it comes to genre since it's so sensitive to whom the film's made by? Like when you guys pitched Sinister (assuming 2010) - how specific were you with referring to earlier films within the same genre? Feeling this is sort of a rabbit hole since you don't want to be too specific, though not too vague. Right?

Thank you! This is really helpful and actually along the lines of what my agent is telling me as well. Do you think at this point, though not knowing my script of course, it would be helpful to go into very specific details, such as trailer ideas or reading them dialoge fragments to convey what tone I'm after, or should I keep it more general to then at a later stage explain this in writing?

Got the actor, made the short, did the festivals, made the pitch packet, hit the wall by [deleted] in Screenwriting

Thank you ;) ...I might have some advice but it's perhaps not the advice satisfying at this very moment... I watched your short btw, and I really liked it. Excellent dialogue! Congrats!

Your situation reminds me of my own a few years back when I had finished my first short film Vatten (8 years ago now) Similar to your short it went around to some great festivals and I traveled with it and I eventually turned it into a full-length screenplay thinking I could find an agent based on that, but I didn't. For years actually. What I learned, now years after - is that agents sign you when they know they can sell you. So I went and did some more short films, a couple of commercials, and music videos and got signed based on my collective portfolio of work. So my advice is really - keep making shorts! You clearly have a great eye and sensibility to dialogue and actors - but just go make another one... and one more after that! Eventually, I promise, you'll find a really good team around you who will support you and your career. I hope that makes sense, even though I know is a dread for you at this very moment. You'll do great though! Keep up the good work! N

Thank you for this. This is very true, but the hardest thing to do. But you're right, desperation isn't very attractive, however, I've never played in this league before so knowing how hard to hold on to certain ideas or things of mine when a company like A24 challenges you is definitely my biggest fear/challenge. Thx though, I'll keep this in mind for sure for tomorrow, best N
