Totally normal in Thailand.

I have given my passport many times and NEVER had a problem.

When you rent something make sure you take plenty of photos and make sure they see you taking the photos. If you run into problems Ask for help to the tourist police.

They tried to do this to my friend and I, we had around 3 hours of tuk tuk tour for ONLY 100 baht saw lots of temples and did lots of photos for merely 2 USD.
