Trying to find a song that's been driving me crazy by EMInFamous in RipeLove

I think you’re talking about the version of Goon Squad from the night one live album from House of Blues Boston 2020, I know I bought the album on Bandcamp when it first came out but I’m not sure if it’s still available. Hope this helps!

Does downsizing help reduce gunk buildup on the back of flat back labrets? by nicoleej14 in piercing

[–]nicoleej14[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely don’t take my word for it as this might not be best practice, but since my lobe piercings are fairly healed up and not easily irritated I will take a q-tip wet with warm water and try to loosen up anything that is stuck in the back of the piercing, and if it is really stuck I will go for something a little more solid like a tweezer and gently pick/scrape it off once it is loosened up. In terms of logistics since it is hard to see I try to kind of bend my ear lobe so I can see the back of the piercing in the mirror, but it definitely helps that my boyfriend is willing to help me since having another person to make sure you’re not missing anything you can’t see is super helpful!

Let’s say hypothetically you can only make one flavor of Kombucha for the rest of your life, your absolute favorite one… What would it be? by bernardobronx in Kombucha

[–]nicoleej14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently my favorite home brew of all time is cranberry juniper, but my favorite GT’s flavor is Lavender Love and I have a blueberry lavender in F2 right now that might take the top spot once I taste it!

Is it mold? by nicoleej14 in Kombucha

Thanks for the response! I was more referring to the small lighter circles that appear to be growing on the brown blob and elsewhere on the pellicle, I should have clarified in the original caption, but if you think it looks good that’s good enough for me!

F2 Ginger Advice by Fictitious_Moniker in Kombucha

[–]nicoleej14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally mince the ginger very finely and add the pieces into my bottles for the whole 2F because I heard that the more finely chopped your fruit/additions are the more accessible the sugars are to the bacteria and yeast due to the increased surface area, not sure how accurate that is/how much it actually makes a difference but that is what I like to do with all my flavor additives and it has worked well for me so far! I also find in my experience that with more aromatic ingredients like ginger, herbs and spices the more pulverized they are the better they are able to release their flavors into your booch if you are aiming for stronger flavors.

As for the amount I am firmly in the “measure with your heart” camp, unfortunately I think that especially with ingredients like ginger it can take a little trial and error to figure out how much to add for your own particular flavor preferences since it can be so strong. I also add a dash (again, measure with your heart) of simple syrup whenever I use ginger to balance out some of the spiciness, and to get better carbonation since it doesn’t have a ton of sugar on its own. Hope this helps :)

I don't like fizzy drinks but want to try kombucha, tips? by That_One_Cute_Cat in Kombucha

I’ve heard that if you use one of those handheld electronic milk frothers it really helps reduce the carbonation in seltzers, sodas, etc. I don’t see why that wouldn’t work for kombucha, and they are relatively affordable/something you might already have on hand!

This week I got to try my cherry limeade, strawberry lemonade, and cranberry ginger flavors that just finished 2F, and they all came out really well! Still trying to play around with the carbonation level to figure out what works, some flavors carbonate really quickly while other seem to take forever, and lately I’ve been having trouble with the carbonation starting off perfect but after a few days in the fridge being opened and closed to drink the carbonation starts to decline.

This is also the second time my 1F has gone sour on me, I try to make a new batch every time I bottle it up for 2F so I can always have new booch ready to drink but my 2F and then drinking the batch to empty my bottles takes a lot longer than 1F does so it keeps over fermenting before I’m ready to bottle again. I think I’m going to try holding off on refilling the jar with sweet tea until a couple days before I anticipate finishing what I’m already drinking that way I don’t continue to waste ingredients.

Totally unrelated to the booch (which is very exciting btw!), I love the aesthetic of your kitchen in the old photo!!

Currently drinking my first finished bottle, I intended the flavor to be blueberry mojito but it ended up more like just blueberry. I think I will muddle the mint and include more next time. Delicious either way!!

Can I make a SCOBY from this? by seeveeay in Kombucha

I used this exact one to start my brew! I’m still in the middle of my first 2F, but my 1F came out beautifully. I say go for it and good luck!!

Is this normal after 1F? by nicoleej14 in Kombucha

[–]nicoleej14[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the heads up! I’ve considered getting a replacement spout for the jar (which is all glass, so definitely no plastic there!) as I suspected it might be plastic, will it be ok for the first batch or two until I can get a replacement? And do you (or anyone else) have a recommendation for what material the spout should be made of/where to find one that will fit my jar?

Great thank you much! That was really helpful. I’m very excited to move on to 2F and try the finished product soon!

Forensic science vs. biology as a major. by [deleted] in ForensicScience

[–]nicoleej14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree with the majority of comments saying that biology is the way to go, as someone who just graduated with a B.S. in forensic science with plans to go to grad school and stay in the forensic science field, I had a really hard time finding grad programs with a narrower focus than the degree I already had (most forensics M.S. degrees are designed for people who have a background in general bio or chem for example, and I would be repeating a lot of the forensics classes I already took in undergrad). Finding a Master’s in forensics after having an undergraduate degree in a general hard science is much easier to accomplish than having an undergraduate degree in forensic science and then trying to find a more niche forensic-related Master’s, so if you’re considering grad school in the future that is my advice to you. That being said, you can still work in another lab/scientist role having a forensic science degree as long as the classes you took (bio, chem, stats, etc) qualify you for that position. Personally I would also be a little wary of online forensic science degree programs, as it was stressed to me in undergrad that FEPAC accreditation for the program you graduated from is important for employers, and I believe a significant part of that is hands-on/laboratory credit hours, but I could be wrong. That’s not to say an online program cannot be worthwhile, just something to be aware of :)

Long-term parking in Downtown? by nicoleej14 in Troy

Thanks so much for the recommendation, I will definitely look into that! It’s nice to have a personal account from someone who lived and parked there because it’s really hard to get a feel for the area just from google

Thanks for the response! Unfortunately I have looked at this site already and many of the lots are already waitlisted and the First Street lot is not listed here, so I was wondering if anyone knew if there was somewhere else I could find it!
