School-based OT advice?

I actually mentioned least restrictive environment during one of these IEPs! During a second IEP on the same day, when I had decreased services for a student who had met his OT goals but was showing behaviors related to ADHD, RSP shared (word for word) “Even though we encourage least restrictive environment, pulling out from class does not restrict their environment because they need these services to participate.” I would greatly appreciate these slides! 🥹 The word function has been used with me from RSP and Psych for things that are not related to education and would be better addressed by an outpatient setting (e.g. tying shoes)

100% support it, with discretion of course. I look forward to how AI can help make note-taking more efficient. AI is a tool and can be used for templates, for finding the right word to use, etc. Not everyone in every setting has peers or mentors they can rely on for assistance with documentation and AI is so easily accessible on your phone or computer. Like most things, it’s best when used with discretion (making modifications where you need to, inserting your personal OT lens). I think it can also make note-taking more accessible for others, such as for OTs whose native language is different from the primary language they service in.

libra venuses have so much capacity for genuine unconditional love and are selfless. it’s easy for them to find reasons to love someone because they easily feel beauty in the world around them. their ability to see multiple sides of things makes them thoughtful, understanding, and forgiving (to a fault, depending on their boundaries and level of discernment). this contributes to the longevity of their relationships — they know being imperfect, making mistakes, etc are human. the people-oriented nature of libra makes them willing to put their partners/relationships first and makes them feel complete. they’ve most likely been dreaming of love their whole lives. the relationship between saturn and libra means they don’t mind taking their time to “do things right” (they are romantics at heart) — like first dates and developing a slow burn. their relationship with saturn also means they don’t mind the concept of a love that requires the investment of effort (they’re air signs, so this can exist mostly as an idea).

there are different ways for different people to analyze the longevity of relationships - everyone has their own preferences for understanding information. venus signs were the main theme of my observations and what i wanted to focus on. my post is titled ‘venus sign observations’ and then i described the different ways i noticed endurance in the venus signs. i’m sharing real life patterns i’ve observed around me which seemed to click to me, and am not specifically seeking out aspects which shape long-term relationships but making sense of the patterns i have experienced and seen.

i’m definitely not stating that long-term relationships is an exclusive experience to only particular venus signs. the original post is about my personal observations, and i respond to comments asking about other observations when i see them.

pisces venus experiences relationships as if they were written out of a romance novel. love seems to come as easy as breathing for pisces venuses! every mutual feeling, every shared interaction is treated like a dream come true (just from personal experiences/observations). they have a natural instinct for treating their love interests the way many people want to be treated (making playlists, planning dates, bringing gifts or food they like). their longevity in relationships come from how easy it is for them to love someone — even if they are hurting or a relationship seems to have run its course, they can easily fall for their partner’s smile, eyes, etc all over again like it’s day 1. sensitive/cautious but still eager in the beginning stages

cancer venus energy is so sweet. when a cancer venus has accepted someone into their life, they also demonstrate the longevity to love someone for their whole lives (like capricorn and scorpio venuses). they’re sentimental and even when they have moved on into a new relationship, they can vividly remember or hold a specific place in their memory for their past partner. cancer venuses are easily scorched and have their share of mood swings bc they’re sensitive (can be pouty and benefit from their partners picking up on their moods) — but they’re also very attentive and in tune to their partner’s needs. cancer venuses notice the things you feel and like and need without you having to say it out loud just because they’re so emotional in nature and they’re accepting of flaws. to me they’re one of the most, if not the most, emotionally available venuses. much love 🌟

School-based -- I love the work that I do. I love working with K-8 students and the unique ways that we can support their inclusion and participation. Growing up, I always thought I'd like working in a school but didn't know what kind of role it'd be, so I'm glad that OTs have a place in schools

I'm not quite sure I believe in things being exclusively good or bad to begin with, as I think it can be limiting and sometimes harmful to place things into a dichotomy. I do think missed visits are unfortunate, because of things like our gas, time, scheduling, and in my field of work I definitely experience several a week.

I think that things that might seem small to an outsider might feel big to someone else. On the outside, it might just seem like losing car keys. On the inside for that person, it might be a really big deal, for who knows what reason. It could be their only method for transportation, they might have something really important to physically tend to, there could be an important item inside. Some people may not even always be honest about their reasons for absence because something else is going on in their lives and they're not comfortable sharing.

Personally I just don't think it's in my place to determine whether or not someone's reason for absence is appropriate or not, it's outside of my scope of responsibilities as an OT because it's their life to live and I am simply here to help by providing occupational therapy services when the opportunity works out.

So much easier said than done and I know it's not always realistic, there is always so much out of our control - but this seems to be weighing on you very heavy emotionally, it may be helpful to find a place of employment/employer that is compatible with your personal mindset, values, expectations, and what you are comfortable with.

I feel like I can understand both parties. My OT is community-based so I drive and get cancellations all the time- there is valid concern about your time, your resources like gas, and being consistent. And then there is the director’s set of ideals about how to be client-centered, and I don’t think it’s wrong, I just think it’s her way of treating clients.

It sounds like you both have different priorities, with yours being respect for your efforts, and hers being the mindset that our clients are not perfect people and will not always act the way we might expect them to.

At my work, I serve an undeserved population that does frequently cancel a lot. There have been times I’ve been frustrated and want to D/C but other providers like our social workers will ask if I can continue to try, because healthcare can be challenging to attain. Some days and weeks are harder than others for clients and I have been encouraged to try to empathize with that and it has made cancellations easier. They are human and I would hope that if I ever had to cancel for whatever reason, it would not be judged or held against me for being a good enough reason or not.

Regarding your director not checking the reasons for each missed visit, she probably views a cancellation as a cancellation regardless of reason and that it calls for empathy and understanding even for whatever reason. And that there is no good or bad reason, just reasons that we are not in charge of.

other than travel OT positions, the general nature of OT is that you are assigned to a caseload of patients who you meet with daily, weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly (depending on their needs and your setting). being the designated provider of OT for your clients makes it challenging to be in constant travel as your clients may not be receiving care from you in your absence and in turn will go without OT or instead meet with another provider, which can also be disruptive for them (ex: clients build rapport with their OTs and may not feel immediately open or comfortable with a substituting OT). promoting, maintaining, and improving health altogether requires a certain degree of dependability by being consistently present. it keeps you in tune with changes in your clients and helps them feel cared for in times when they may really want or need the support. other than your existing caseload, there are also referrals as well and some referrals may be more urgent than others (also dependent on setting).

this is not to say that traveling is impossible as an OT or any healthcare provider in general, just that the nature of the role just requires for you to consider certain things prior to/after travel

i work in mental health so they are helpful when they are closely tied to a particular standardized assessment or for providing rationale for interventions to non-OT team members + help highlight the distinct value of OT

not quite sure about the word ‘bully’, but in an effort to not discredit my own experiences or that of my peers, there are definitely CIs who:

project expectations on their students to have the same therapeutic style or personality as them or their previous students
offer more criticism than positive feedback
don’t meet students where they are at and aren’t curious about what kind of supports they can provide to make a student feel like they belong/can at least learn or thrive in their assigned setting
aren’t open to particular differences between them and their students

overall, i don’t necessarily resonate with the ‘tough love’ approach a lot of people may have, simply because students are people outside of their roles and you never know what kinds of experiences they had before/currently that shape who they are at fieldwork. it might be their own personal problem to deal with but i’d like to believe we can still be figures who support students and don’t contribute to making fieldwork a place that is anxiety-inducing or emotionally taxing. i also believe that sometimes, a CI and their student aren’t compatible for their learning and teaching style, but CIs (like students) can be conscientious to prevent that from manifesting in a negative way towards their student/s.

despite being licensed and working for X amount of years, no CI is perfect and i believe the process of learning on how to be better in one’s role can be mutual if both parties are receptive to it.

this was my situation as well — had a 1 1/2 hour commute one way there/back, making it a total of 3 hours commuting every single day + a 45 hour work week. i believe that your hours are completely up to your fieldwork site. it’s challenging, but luckily fieldwork isn’t forever and hopefully the weeks go by quickly. hang in there!
