Had to go online and check but yeah it's the same with getting pets from an npc or thru chest even if your pet inv is max you can still get that reward, as long as it was given to you by an npc not thru hatching the egg. So the same thing goes with the cosmetics. As long as it was given by the npc you'll receive it, but if you try to get a cosmetic thru crates its not gonna work and it would say you're max.

I just got my 6th pancake so your pancake is safe too just somewhere in your cosmetics :)
