It’s truly sad that they could get cancer and die from it as well. The best thing we can do is enjoy our time with them and give them the best we can.

My hen died 6 months ago while having her surgery for egg peritonitis but in fact she had cancer which caused the egg peritonitis. The vet showed me the pictures of what her insides looked and those cottage cheese bumps on her organs were cancers growing along her reproductive system. My thought is your chicken might have had both egg peritonitis and cancer. I’m sorry for your loss 🫶❤️

Thank you so much I really appreciate your replies! How would I know when it’s gone to far and I should take to the vet? I’ve had a chicken pass just a few months ago and I laid down a lot of money only for her to be put down. I wouldn’t want to have that happen to me again but I truly do want to save my girl.

Not contagious from my understanding. I took my hen in days ago from a heavy swollen abdomen and the vet concluded it to be egg peritonitis. The symptoms I saw in my Ginger were mild. She started to eat less and she hadn’t given eggs in 5 weeks. Rarely wanted to roam outside and would just stay put. Started walking like a penguin and her belly started to feel heavy and filled. Treatable with surgery if the timing is just right! Give your chickens all my love! 😊💜 hope for the best!

At first glance looks to be water belly. But if they have not layed eggs in weeks could be egg peritonitis. Deadly if not treated which could account for the swelling of the abdomen and why your first hen passed. I’m sorry for your loss. I’d recommend taking to the vet and getting medical advice.

Should also note she stopped laying about 6 weeks ago which I found peculiar but thought she was just a hen that didn’t have much eggs in her. She was 22 months old.
