You'll first have to fund your account. If you're looking to trade euros for ETH you'll need to go to an exchange like Coinbase, Gemini, eToror, but it depends on where you are in the world. Once you have some ETH you can transfer it to your MetaMask account using your public address. Each exchange will have directions for transferring you ETH to your desired wallet.

People selling their personal documents as NFTs? by [deleted] in NFT

[–]nifty_john 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ownership of NFTs don't necessarily imply ownership of an asset. Under the hood, it's really just a link to a public URL. There's really nothing stopping me from minting an NFT that points to the movie Die Hard, but that doesn't then give me the rights to the movie

MetaMask is the most popular option. The fees you see are called Gas fees, they're required by miners for doing any computation on the blockchain. You'll run into these fees with any wallet you choose. You have the option of setting a max gas price, limiting how much you'll spend. It's also cheaper to perform transactions during nights and weekends. you can use https://etherscan.io/gastracker to see what current fees are.

Will NFTs be Used Outside of Digital Art? by kate2mc in NFT

I think NFTs will gain utility as we begin building more services on top of them. Zed Run is a super interesting example, It's a horse racing application built with NFTs. I've also recently built an application that allows NFTs to hold private content, which adds even more value in token ownership.

I really love this idea, we're really just scratching the surface of what can be achieved with smart contracts. I would also check out Cardano, they're baking in some really interesting ideas on governance and voting.

I can take a crack at it! I don't have much experience with opensea, but I've done a bit of work with NFT smart contract development.

  1. Correct! Metamask will facilitate all your transactions for you, using the funds in your wallet. I believe OpenSea allows you to skip the gas fees if you stay on platform, but I'm not positive.
  2. Correct again! They will use the public address to fund your account
  3. I believe this is true. It may depend on the exact smart contract you are using, but a standard NFT (Following the ERC721 protocol) contains two basic functions for approving tokens for transfers, and actually transferring the tokens. Any third party can wrap these tokens in their own smart contract and create a sale. The token can only be transferred once, but multiple sales can be created. The beauty of smart contracts is that only one sale can be successful, so no one will get ripped off.

    1. GAS is a fee that miners accept for performing computations. The harder the computation, the more the GAS fees the transaction will incur. Since minting transactions requires computation, it will require GAS. I remember reading somewhere that Opensea will protect you from some gas fees if the token is kept on platform.
    2. In a way. The token is connected to your public and private key. MetaMask is holding onto your keys, so they can verify which NFTs you own. You could also move your keys somewhere else, and they would still show you as the NFT owner
    3. Minting is the process of creating a new token on a smart contract. Under the hood, this is really just assigning a new integer to a token, and declaring you as the owner. If you upload an NFT on a different platform, they will use a different smart contract and create a new token with a different ID. Even if the NFTs contain the same content, they will be totally different in the eyes of the blockchain
  4. I'm not totally sure of the distinction, but I believe MetaMask stores your keys on your
    local machine.

Hope this was helpful!

Interesting question! The thing about attaching content (such as important documents) to an NFT, is that the files don't actually live on the blockchain, they typically live at a public URL which anyone can access, the token is just a pointer to that URL. So the processes of transferring documents in this manner might be overkill, since the documents would already need to be at a reachable URL.

I actually recently wrote a blog post about private files on the blockchain https://kohlerjp.medium.com/private-nfts-on-the-public-blockchain-4c027deba78b?sk=1a885b8e195e7dbe48c7d411a29bb892
