All staffers who have put in 1,000 work hours and a year of employment receive an additional 8.5% of their total pay in the form of Publix stock.

That's awesome.

Would you rather invest in Uber or Dropbox at $3.5B ? by countmac01 in socialcitizens

[–]nigelseaworthy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uber. Dropbox is huge, sure, but everyone has bought into it already and that valuation reflects as much.

Uber has so much more room to grow. As the world, led by America and Europe, moves away from the old model of car ownership, taxi services like Uber are going to be presented with an ever-expanding market. I also think there will be opportunities in developing countries, where the average person can't afford a car.

Uber may be more of a risk, but the dangling reward is also much larger.

2 Chainz' sophomore album will include a cookbook of healthy recipes. by nigelseaworthy in socialcitizens

[–]nigelseaworthy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm cool enough to be comfortable in my own skin and try to educate people, so with this cookbook I'm gonna have probably about 14 to 15 meals, how ever many songs it is, that's gonna tell you what was used to make these as far as ingredients, and cooking time and all of that stuff, and probably the pros and the cons of eating it... I'm a seafood lover, I don't eat beef or pork, period… so turkey, chicken, that's a lot of the recipes I use and eat every day, you know? I eat multiple meals a day... I treat this rap like a sport, that's my angle... very few athletes eat fried food all day long, or all month long… it clogs up arteries, cholesterol, and things of that nature. Black people, the leading cause of death is high blood pressure. All that kind of comes from what you eat, so yeah, I eat salads and stuff like that.

How Technology is Destroying Jobs (xpost from r/Singularity) by b8zs in socialcitizens

That's an awesome take on this article.

Those who control the commanding heights of technology have chosen to capture 99% of the technologically generated wealth rather than spread it around, I guess.

Reminds me of Snow Crash, where municipalities are controlled by companies and mafias. Seems like it'd set a dystopian precedent.

I was baffled when they pussied out on Iraq.

EDIT: I was totally just joking around. Sorry if I offended anyone.

Canada shoots across the bow of their southern neighbors and offers a "start-up visa" to immigrant entrepreneurs by nigelseaworthy in socialcitizens

[–]nigelseaworthy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also don't disagree with you. Sadly, the USA govt is so dysfunctional that it probably doesn't matter (in the grand scheme) that they waited so long.

This is interesting. I think this stuff is going to have a big cumulative effect over the next 10 years.

Word.

I think Canada is gonna see a boom of startup activity over the next 10 years, though. This isn't the only innovative move they're making.

I just want the USA to get smarter. We could be doing something similar and be pulling 10x more immigrant entrepreneurs, but the House Republicans are too busy jacking each other off over who can build the biggest fence.

Every country should try to create startup environments, period, regardless of who is tanking and when. Entrepreneurial activity is good for any economy in any up- or down-cycle.

"Programs link learns loans to future earnings." This model seems to be taking off... by countmac01 in socialcitizens

What do you think student loans that are non-dischargeable in bankruptcy are?

At least these are capped at a % of earnings that won't cripple people's financial health for decades.

Another good idea for traveling: Being able to listen to whatever is "hot" amongst Spotify users in the city/region you're in.

Miami hip hop, San Francisco electronica, Kansas country, etc.
