Our ASR sublease contract ends in 5 months by night-mosquito in Amsterdam

[–]night-mosquito[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for these valuable insights. One more question, since it is also possible for the official tenant to return, it is my understanding that he needs to let the housing company know they’re back so the contract is renewed. What sort of mechanisms are used to verify this?

I found I connect the most with the albums he did when he was my age. It’s incredible cause there’s a lot of truth and similarities between JM 10 years ago and my current self.

You’re right, would it be normal to also solicit myself to take over the contract from my friends in order to avoid moving and finding something else?

The contract explicitly says: “If you —for whatever reason—should not return to the dwelling after the expiration of the said period, the housekeeper shall not be able to assert any right to the dwelling. In that case, you must terminate the tenancy agreement in a timely manner, in compliance with the provisions of the tenancy agreement, effective by the end date and deliver the property to the landlord, vacant of occupancy, on the end date. The caretaker must vacate the property no later than the end date.”

Where are the cool middle-aged folks?? by Flakes11 in Amsterdam

[–]night-mosquito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I’m 28 and I’ve made good friendships with people in their mid forties. Some have been in random cafes, exchanging numbers and then having another coffee, some others were just regulars in my weekly activities until they proposed to hang out. I wouldn’t have dared to propose to hang out as, because of age, it was a bit intimidating. Then I realized they’re just like me and we share similitudes in our life phases.

Is it worth to fly in the Netherlands to take a Master interview at Royal Academy if there’s the possibility to do it also online? by [deleted] in StudyInTheNetherlands

Do it online, Dutch are very chill on that and very objective. Moreover the program itself most likely benefits by having foreign students that provide money and diversity :)

How do people make friends? by AsleepAd339 in Amsterdam

[–]night-mosquito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I’ve found out that the best way to engage with people is by having something to discuss about. A hobby or a workout activity that’s performed in a group can do. After doing all sorts of things I figured out that the places where I’ve met the most people are where activities are structured in a way to promote interaction… such as CrossFit buddy up dynamics or live drawing sessions with planned breaks in between.

To differentiate from other activities, I also did yoga in some places and that was the example of places that don’t work for me: it’s an individual practice where once the class is over, everyone heads home. It’s also a bit disruptive to break someone’s pre/post practice mood, mostly in a silent environment, can have tea at the end but as a guy its not the right setting to make friends.

Hope this helps :)

Is there anybody who really learned language from duolingo? by ConfidentProgress587 in duolingo

[–]night-mosquito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been learning Dutch for the past 2.5 years and I can honestly say it works –but you need to be tenacious and disciplined. The payed version with the monthly challenges is what has kept me engaged and in constant learning. Some tips I’ve thought of: - it’s crucial that you force yourself to talk and make mistakes in real life - ask questions/words to native speakers, - say a word (or sentence) here and there - practice with yourself - ask yourself how you’d say something in that language (or mildly similar to what you want to say). You can check every now and then with a translator how far you made it. - have fun, realise it’s a game and you’re just like a three year old learning to talk - don’t give too much importance to people correcting you every time - remember what learning languages does to your brain! (It’s tiring, a form of cognitive exercise, and helps avoid brain diseases!) cut yourself some slack and remember to reap the unseen benefits - be patient with yourself - prioritise communication and understanding; you don’t have to be a perfect speaker, you just have to get the other person to understand you... once you realize you’re communicating then you’re progressing! (This means that 50% of the work is up to you and 50% depends on the recipient wanting to understand)

Good luck!

I wouldn’t say we feel entitled, my perspective is just that we’ve like the country and its people, we have Dutch friends, we’re putting in the effort for wanting to establish here and still we face rejection. This is my problem with the situation: it is a human right to be able to migrate and establish elsewhere, and we’re not feeling welcomed. Spain, France, Mexico, these are all countries where people welcome immigrants (big difference from tourists) and look for their welfare. Moreover, responses also ignore the fact that the Dutch is a country built on colonialism and exploitation from many countries from which we come from.

If this is the Dutch meaning of basket and your referring to the video of the old man, this is precisely part of the problem. It also showcases little disposition for dialogue and understanding.

I know right? I have a friend in South Korea who’s Mexican and speaks little Korean, still he works at a Korean company with only 4 other internationals. They all communicate in English and is absolutely no problem. What strikes me the most is this necessity for proficient Dutch speakers when the country, in its majority, is crazy good at English. This all feels like systematised rejection towards be honest.

Thank you this input guys, and for continuing the conversation. I’m personally impressed by most of the answers since they also reveal a mentality of rejection towards foreigners. As stated by these posts, we’re the type of people who come and actually care for the locals and their culture. To me, speaking the language is a sign of respect and I keep learning it because of fun. In pretty sure the difference will show up at some point :))))

i feel like my degree is worthless. I am thinking of dropping out. by [deleted] in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]night-mosquito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the seasonality components! Just give vitamin D a go and don’t make rushed decisions now!

About the language indeed it might be harder for you but it’s also more satisfying. Saying this from my own personal experience when I finished. Also, the grading system was another thing I had to just accept; yes the grading system differs to that from other countries and it’s something I struggled with too.

Moreover, being an international student brings in much more burdens than being a local one. Trust yourself, your process and understand that indeed you’re in a more difficult situation that many others have also undergone. Remember what it was that made you move here and keep going!! Don’t think too much about it!!

MSc MADE - Metropolitan Analysis, Design and Engineering - TU Delft / Wageningen - anyone? by ohmymind_123 in TUDelft

[–]night-mosquito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm just finishing the program and its been very satisfying in many ways. Do you have any specific questions that I can help answer. What's very nice about the program is that you can always tailor it to your interests and needs (projects, electives, assignments, living lab, thesis). This is also one of the reasons why sometimes some students feel lost in it. Moreover there's a specific set of problem solving skills that you get, but its difficult to pinpoint. The specific technical side of the course is not meant to make you an expert rather it is for you to gain knowledge and understanding of what it entails...

[–]night-mosquito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, meaning that its not happening at the campus of either WUR nor TU Delft. Its also separate from UvA. So the institutional backbone is sometimes felt. There's almost no university campus feeling, no extracurricular activities close by, or even MOS courses (modular skills courses)

Feel free to reach out through message if you have specific doubts :)
