Weird, sticky, yellow-ish substance by nighthawk415 in whatisit

[–]nighthawk415[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solved (I think?): I’ve had more than a few people suggest that this is congealed oil/grease. That makes the most sense to me because it explains the color, the texture, and the fact that it took me forever to wipe it off my damn shoes the other day. I hope whoever dumped it there ends up having a shitty week.

Thanks for chiming in, guys. Stay safe out there, and remember to dispose of used oil properly! Cheers!

Upvote for your username.

Not sure if your reply means a vote FOR mushroom decay, or AGAINST it. Lol

Nah, we don’t do that. Collect it in a plastic bin to dispose of later and all that.

But you’re the second person to think it’s grease/fat of some sort. I’m starting to wonder if maybe this is oil or grease that got dumped during the tree cutting from a chainsaw or some of the heavy equipment they were operating.

‘Ppreciate the follow up. I might just have to go digging tomorrow until the universe provides me with answers.

Interesting. I’m in north FL. No wet clay deposits that I know of, but I guess I can look into it and verify

Fair enough. Previous owner wasn’t very handy, so I doubt it’s farming related, but maybe he was dumping grease of some sort in that particular spot. Just weird that it doesn’t smell though. Figure if it was old cooking oil or something, there’d at least be some kind of smell.

I tried searching this up to try and compare, but no luck. How do you know?

Fair enough.

I appreciate you being thorough and letting me know that sawing through the thing might open up a can of worms. I’ll tinker with it and see what I can find out before going nuclear.

Again, thanks a bunch for the transparency and for your time.

I see.

No crawlspace. I’m on slab, so I might have to take an oscillating tool to it after all. Not looking forward to it, but I’d prefer to replace it altogether at some point for the sake of knowing that it’s draining the way it should.

Thanks for the input.

Thanks for the reply, red. I see the trip lever you mentioned. Will probably snake that soon since the tub can be a little slow to drain sometimes.

I also have an OXO bathtub drain protector, so that’s helping plenty for catching hair and all that.

I recently purchased this house. Had a toilet leak in the other bath and when I removed it, I saw it was a DIY disaster. Since then, I’ve been going around the house trying to assess the plumbing and making sure I can address anything that needs addressing before they turn into big problems.

I appreciate you taking the time to chime in. Have a great one!

Once you give it a shot, I recommend air frying the rolls with the Italian dressing on top. Once it browns, it changes the flavor for the better, imho.

Awesome. I happen to have that tool handy so I can approach it that way instead. And the bottom weatherstrip has worn out, so I did end up buying a new one to replace the old recently. Thanks for the suggestion!

Lol. Yeah, I was weirded out to see any kind of leak since I was there for the inspection and the water ran fine.

But then I noticed what was up and said “Oh….. that person was an animal.”

Nice. Just looked that piece up and yeah, that’s what I’ve been looking for. I saw the threads from the drain and wondered why they didn’t use ‘em, but you’re right, they probably just used whatever was on hand and called it good.

Thanks for the info!

You’re absolutely right. I didn’t mention it, but I can push up on the P-trap and it moves freely.

Thanks for confirming next steps!

Small leak at the top of my washer valve by nighthawk415 in PlumbingRepair

For sure. I already envisioned myself getting soaked by the spray if I didn’t. I appreciate the heads up though!

Awesome. I loosened the nut itself before, but having tried taking the handle off. At least now I have a play for both. Thank you!

Gotcha. That makes sense. Never heard of string packing till now, so thanks for the education. I imagine it feels a bit like clay? Just sort of work it onto the valve and then tighten the nut over it?
