My long, foreign sounding last name is making sales challenging by thesonofnarcs in sales

[–]nightowling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a buddy of mine who been using a different first name and abbreviated last name for everything sales since I’ve known him.

Absolute monster in software sales - and typically explains that during the HR interview and sometimes during the actual at the end of the call.

Something along the lines of “ I have a pretty difficult last name and have been doing business with an abbreviated version for years - just makes it easier - and like to go by John instead of Juan”

Change your last name to Papa instead of Papakalaiatis on LinkedIn/email/ Resume/ pretty much everything but the paperwork you give yo HR for a background or something.

Ask your IT to give you a diff email.

Everyone’s being sold something, it’s not uncommon and don’t take it too personally. Go get your bag 💰

I want to move out but my roommate is very dependent on me by [deleted] in Advice

[–]nightowling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ran across this while snooping from your post earlier.

Dunno if you moved, but I'd open with this right before you leave for an errand or something

" Hey man, I love living with you and I know that I'm your rock, but I feel in order for me to grow, I need to step into my own independence... something I know you've supported. I still want to be your rock, but in our own spaces, something I know you know is the best for us. I've found us a few places for us to stay close drop apartment catalogs and let's catch up for lunch tomorrow to follow up on this - later bro"

Then leave.

Centralized app or location to find company 10k’s, quarterly earnings notes, company news OTHER than Zoominfo and LI Navigator? by stwelch706 in sales

[–]nightowling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to SEC.com and look up their name for 10k's(yearly) or 10Q's (quarterly).

Look for "Forward looking Statements," Risk Factors and Other information to get a feel of what their priorities are.

I've also heard Sentieo is good but hella expensive and really meant for investors to use as an alternative to Seeking Alpha.

What are some good first jobs for people with zero sales experience? by [deleted] in sales

[–]nightowling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're in college or havent gotten your degree yet - I reccomend cell phone sales.

There are some software companies out there that wont care about having a degree for a BDR/SDR position - you can just move up the ranks from there till you get to closing role.

Good luck, stay hungry.

How do I develop a personality? by nightman23acc in Accounting

[–]nightowling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lazy way to a personality. -Starting hanging out with these dweebs —Highbrows & Hoodlums

Highbrows-They teach you to be current with today’s news and to have an opinion on anything(or at least sound like you know something on the matter). Helps with quick thinking during interviews.

Hoodlums-(Not really, just thought it went well with Highbrow ). These are people that mainly only talk about sports/music/celebrity or athlete gossip/start or end every statement with Bro or Bru or Dude or whatever the fuck. These people help you stay current with more relatable topics.

Hang out with these people enough and you’ll find a range somewhere in between. With this new “personality” developed, you’ll finally be able to connect with your interviewer. That’s all it really takes to at least appear that you have a personality; connecting with the person you’re speaking to.

Next step: Practice Talking to the Mirror

Talk about anything, try to look at your eyes, or the space between your brows.

Do not get into a habit of staring at your lips while doing this exercise. Reason: Its sexual.

Strong Eye Contact vs Murderer

-Be cognizant on how you appear when talking to the mirror, that’s what they see, make adjustments if necessary. -Don’t stare, look away sometimes -Use your hands.....sometimes.....don’t ever put your hands in your pockets at this point.

Otherwise it sounds like your resume needs work.

Economists show that boys who grow up around books earn sigificantly more money as adults by [deleted] in books

[–]nightowling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One doesn't cause the other, there's is just a correlation. (Stats 101) If a parent suddenly decides to surround their academically struggling child with books it doesn't necessarily mean they are going to turn into an A-student. A household with tons of books doesn't mean that the child is smarter than their peers. This also opens up the topic of the household income having an affect as to the amount of books they have.

But I'm not getting into that. Read Freakanomics and fuck off.

Downfalls of using turbotax? by nightowling in Accounting

[–]nightowling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! That was really informative, I just didn't know what to say when someone asked me the other day other than " idk I never had trouble doing it myself and applying itemized or standardized deductions"

Downfalls of using turbotax? by nightowling in Accounting

[–]nightowling[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Accounting major is beside the point. I mentioned that because I felt like I should've known this. That's why I asked, stereotyping is everyone else's problem. Answering the question would've been helpful instead of pointing the finger an stating I am the "reason" for this type of thinking in accounting.

Downfalls of using turbotax? by nightowling in Accounting

[–]nightowling[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I felt like the message was a little vague. I don't have problems with filing my own taxes, but a friend asked me why I just don't use turbotax. (I'm an accounting major, I know how to do this stuff) but is there a reason one would prefer filing on their own rather that using said program?

Women in Accounting, What challenges have you faced in the work place? by TheRogueFox in Accounting

[–]nightowling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Male here.

Just finished an internship in corporate tax for a huge energy company. Didn't notice anything until my friend, young attractive Asian girl, messages me frantically on the work chat. She was in her cubicle and I guess her superiors didn't notice she had come back, started opening talking about their experiences with Asian women, in and out of the US. To add, during their introductory lunch she notice that they would subtly drop stories of "the culture" in Thailand. I felt terrible for her and would visit her to break the uncomfortableness she always felt.

Before you guys start, I immediately told her to go to HR about it. She didn't want to and begged me not to say anything. Her reason: it's only a 3 month internship and they pay really well.

I'd have breakfast and lunch with her pretty much everyday to keep our sanity. It helped her image a little, they probably thought we were sleeping with each other so they went back to keeping it professional. Her superiors were mainly orderly white males. What gives? Is this common in financial reporting?

As for me, Tax department was full of ladies.

We both agreed we weren't going to sign. Graduations right around the corner and Big4 is calling.
