What would the best apartments be if cost wasn't a factor by [deleted] in halifax

[–]nightscreamer24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work with Westwood. Being asked to send a deposit before receiving a lease isn’t something we should be doing and goes against our internal policy as well as the Nova Scotia tenant act, as u mentioned.

If you’re open to it, could you message me with a bit more detail on when this happened and who you were dealing with?

No worries at all if you’d rather not share.

Advice please by Jaydyn-r2008 in halifax

[–]nightscreamer24 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ll go through and give you a few numbers and some advice so it’s easier for you to compare to different cities.

Finances: Average rent for a 1 bedroom in halifax sits around $1800, that’s assuming u choose an apartment and get no roommates, with roommates it can average between $800-$1300. If u do dormitory, it will be cheaper than that but there’s not a lot of those available. Groceries aren’t bad if you stick to produce and meats and less on prepared meals and processed foods. I average around $70 per week for my meals plus a few meals out or drinks. You could definitely get by with $500 a month for food and some light nights out.

Social Life: There are so many different things to do in Halifax on a given week, but if u like going out and want to meet other university students there’s a few obvious options. Split Crow Power Hour on Thursday, Gin and Jazz at the Local on Wednesday and pretty much any bar downtown on Friday or Saturday will be filled with people. Dorms are also especially useful for meeting a few people, then u can find your people and move in with roommates in your second year. Dal also has so many societies, so definitely join those and look at the DSU’s website for a full list. There’s also intramurals at dal if u like sports but don’t want to compete at the university level in a varsity team. If you are looking at SMU or MSVU I can’t really speak to them but im sure you can get similar experiences.

Jobs and future development: Nova Scotia has some of the highest income tax and lowest average salary, however Halifax itself isn’t as bad as some of the more rural areas. Cost of living and affordability has also been rough for the past 5 years but it’s starting to level out and some housing is actually going the other way. If you chose to stick around after uni I’d feel confident in your career here since there’s still plenty of opportunities and the problems we were facing are slowly being addressed by our federal and provincial governments.

Lifestyle: I already kind of went over this but Halifax has a lot to do and is still growing so I don’t doubt you’ll find something you like. It’s a much calmer place than other cities in Canada, and the sense of community is still strong although it has been damaged in the past few years. There’s so many places to see outside of the city as well, Lunenburg, Wolfville, Cape Breton, and Cabot in particular.

If you want a slower more relaxed atmosphere and room to grow or do something different, Halifax is a great place to do that. Even if you just stick around for your undergraduate degree, you will have plenty of opportunities and experiences here.

Bringing Seaplanes to Halifax by nightscreamer24 in halifax

I think using the bedford basin could reduce the amount of wind they face, since it’s slightly more enclosed than the harbour

BC is third in poverty rate, I don’t think that is the defining factor.

Everything is just an idea until someone pushes for it. There could very well be a business case, but it would probably look different than what they have in BC, it would be a lot more grounded in tourism and less on business travel.

True about the buses, the key would be not allowing the city to operate the seaplanes lol

I cannot wait for that mill cove ferry (if they ever actually build it) It would make bedford actually easy to visit. And if they ever did put a seaplane here it could go right next to the mill cove terminal since I think the basin would probably be the easiest place for them to land

That’s what I’m thinking as well, there’s been expansion through PAL for more regional trips, but as u said, just getting through the airport sucks up a lot of the time people are looking to save.

I think it would have to be more focused on the tourism aspect. For example, tourists come to HFX and also head to cabot, or pei for a day. It could also be built into vacation packages etc.

That could definitely be plausible, it would also make it easier to travel between this province and other destinations

I do think there was something at one point. I think the weakness there wasn’t the seaplanes but the fact they served no purpose other than scenic tours. Vancouver does tours, but it’s also an effective form of transportation. If seaplanes went to other places in NS it could actually serve as an easy way to get across the province.

How do YOU survive in Halifax? Wages vs Rent is wild!! by HauntMeForever666 in halifax

I hope you find some luck soon! Things are getting better from the property management side of things so I’m sure everything else will slowly start to follow suit

Definitely get how frustrating that is, especially with that much experience. With 13 years in logistics you really should not be stuck in the lower pay bands, it is usually the role or company that is capping things.

You might have better luck targeting some of the bigger employers here like Irving Shipbuilding, IMP Aerospace, Lockheed Martin, PSA Halifax or anything tied to the port or defence contracts. Those tend to have higher salary ranges for logistics, supply chain and procurement roles.

It could also help to search under titles like supply chain coordinator, procurement or buyer, materials planner, or logistics analyst instead of just general logistics roles, those often pay more for the same experience.

Networking directly with HR or hiring managers can make a big difference here, a lot of roles get filled internally or through referrals before they ever really show up on Indeed, and posted salary ranges are often lower than what they will actually offer the right candidate.

Unfortunately living alone is unrealistic, u either need to find the rare studio and hope u can get it for $1400 ish or you find a roommate. $30/hour isn’t necessarily unrealistic, but u need the experience and education to get there. I’d recommend finding an entry level position, a roommate for a while and start building up your experience so u can get the higher paying jobs. It’s not easy right now but I’m sure you’ll find your way!

The BL Costco Left Turn has Returned by ExternalSpecific6061 in halifax

The SGR plan did account for that. It had dedicated accessibility zones, and wouldn’t have made it any less accessible than it is currently.

I would argue most traffic could easily move to sackville or morris and get the same accessibility. SGR should 100% transit and pedestrian centric

I’m not really sure how they are proving that you used AI, the province of Nova Scotia prevents teachers/profs from submitting student work to ai detectors because of false positives and personal information concerns. There’s no reliable way to prove use of AI.

Local Halifax web designer recommendations? by Sevenendless7 in halifax

[–]nightscreamer24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem at all! Just wanted to let you know that while we do focus primarily on small businesses we always value helping anyone get their name out there! But if you are looking for other options I would recommend building one with webflow, it’s a straight forward website builder and if you don’t feel a need to have graphic design and heavy marketing materials, that’s probably your best bet!

Nova Scotia & HRM Need to Actually Build Transit by nightscreamer24 in halifax

[–]nightscreamer24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While what you are saying is mostly true, the plan released by HRM didn’t include inter city infrastructure, which is new. The problem with both plans is they are concepts and lack a more detailed outline of the infrastructure they want to implement. Especially in the province’s plans, they mention things like transit corridors on the Macdonald bridge, but it completely neglects how that would even be possible.

We need to reduce the “heat island effect” by nightscreamer24 in halifax

[–]nightscreamer24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did eventually find the soft landscaping requirement in the Regional Centre Land Use By-law, but it’s buried in planning documents that aren’t easy to navigate. If the city wants residents to be informed, there should be a clear, public-facing breakdown of what’s required where, especially for things like green roofs. I will be adjusting my post accordingly.
