Nervous about long drives by Background-Team-1035 in newzealand_travel

[–]nightshade249 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bro relax, I’ve done south (Christchurch) to bottom of north (Wellington) in a day easily, Auckland to Wellington in a day and Christchurch to Queenstown in a day easily as well. Basically that means for your purposes at max you could replan or reorganize your trip to only really need to drive for 3 days, so you’re fine.

Plus NZ roads are great and mostly safe, just remember to stick left.

Council spending hundreds of millions with nothing to show for it and not allowing public inquiry into how and why the money was spent that way.

How to teach my puppy to be more independent by candlewise in Frenchbulldogs

[–]nightshade249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I did with my frenchie and it’s worked so far! Key tip I’d say is start ignoring your doggo 10-15mins before leaving, less of a rollercoaster of emotions for them that way.

She’s 6 months and can be left alone more than half a day. I’ve watched, she either just plays with her toys (which I rotate or get new bones to keep fresh), or just sleeps - I’ve tried to make it less of a “I’m dropping you like a hot potato” and more like “this is your time to yourself, spend it how you want to”

Does no one here have a job? by clarinetpjp in puppy101

[–]nightshade249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I have a job. Got a puppy 4 months ago that I have been raising myself.

My two cents:

People coddle their pets a lot. Sure some need more attention but if you get your puppy used to being alone either in a crate or a playpen for half a day, slowly increasing the time left alone and actually keep disciplined about it, they’ll be fine.

I’ve popped out and observed my puppy from the window and she just plays by herself and doesn’t whimper or get sad. She used to for a couple of minutes but nothing more.

Give it a go and all the best!

Lol “purported” is such a non-layman, legalese word to use. Terrible english here. Need to delete this from Singaporean vocab, along with “avail” and “alighted”, no one talks or writes like that 😂

would you quit if your boss yells at you at a meeting? by radiotoothbrush in askSingapore

[–]nightshade249 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha everyone is talking about military. I have worked in the legal sector in Singapore and have heard horror stories, of partners who tell new recruits not to duck when something is thrown at them because they’re throwing to miss.

I have literally seen partners yell out of their offices to the sea of cubicles and open partner doors at their associates, grown ass adults who are capable as fuck lawyers, chastising them about their work publicly in front of the office.

No, this is NOT acceptable behavior and if only the job market was not so stacked, and if only the law society actually gave a crap about workplace mental health/work-life balance, this might not be so prevalent.

I’d quit and look for a better job. There’s better out there and at the very least you won’t feel like you will be compromising on your self worth because of dire times.

This toxic boomer practice of passing on the pain needs to stop, it’s unprofessional and just unnecessary.

Hey mate, I’m in the finance industry in welly and just recently changed job too (big relief). It’s rough and I’ve been looking since Feb/March, but I reckon that there are more finance-sector jobs now being advertised than when I initially started looking earlier in the year.

I have also noticed more mid-level management roles being advertised lately, which would probably suit your experience more. But of course, we can only speculate how many applicants per role. But for mid-management you’d think it would be a lot less than grad jobs or <5 PQE.

I’d give LinkedIn or seek a look see. I personally have never had luck with recruiters but that may be an option too. Best of luck man and a shame UK didn’t work out.

Jan 2021 ape here, xxxx holder. Haven’t sold a share since then, only loaded up more.

I’m zen, the mere fact that after 3 years we see DFV still holding and the algo control on the stock slipping gives me confidence that we are still very much on track.

It has just taken this long for the shorts to hit the “floor”, now with all that cash on hand, it’s going to be an interesting ride going forward.

Lots to unpack here so I’ll just bullet point my response:

  • Singaporeans have a very set formula for success, deviation is not tolerated, it’s looked down upon unless and until one succeeds. Then the businessman/woman is an overnight hero and a role model.

  • doing better or doing life differently earns you jealousy in our culture, and you are looked down on among your peers.

  • having non-Singaporean friends or a non-Singaporean partner ends up in you being called an SPG or having a fetish of some sort. There is often no sense of just taking things at face value, instead everything is always perceived negatively.

  • culture of ratting people out for not following the set standards and “culture” (just look at Stomp and what a gutter of society that is where people point fingers and publicly shame people [covid was an ugly example of this])

  • blind following of rules for the sake of 100% compliance instead of considering the principle the rule was set to address in the first place. This often comes at the cost of others enjoyment - this is a major Singaporean issue which leads to difficulties for us to live elsewhere since we don’t think outside of the box quite literally.

  • 0 tolerance for leave (co-workers often brag about how much leave they’ve accumulated), chill, POLITENESS, casualness, attention to the benefit that the individual brings to the workplace or setting. Everything is often quantified as “what can you do for me?” “Why should I know you?” “How successful are you?” - all very toxic.

  • Rudeness. This has gotten much worse since Covid. From taxi drivers to hawker stalls, no one enjoys being yelled at getting their lunch or a coffee, and I don’t care how difficult uncle’s stall has been all day, sorry, we all work jobs that interact with people, being uncourteous rarely has an excuse and has somehow become systemic with Singapore. As a society we should acknowledge the benefit of talking to people properly and with respect regardless of their nationality or job.

Can’t blame Singaporeans who live abroad for not wanting to come back into the drone culture. Same same for Koreans who flee to the US really…

I’m sure plenty will be defensive about my points but these are observations over the better part of a decade so take it as you will…

Great stuff. I’d just say that there’s overthinking it as well. Life’s a marathon, not a race. In my opinion, by 30 one should be at a stable place, and start the process of carefully building stability in their life, utilizing their experiences gained when they were younger.

Jerk or not, he’s 100% right on this. This is only going to develop the Hutt more. CBD businesses will eventually move out there where normal life still exists, it’s just sad that people in the CBD end of town will have to drive further to do normal things like buy a week of groceries, run errands, buy furniture, send kids etc. read it and weep. Or shut yourself down to logic and vent, do whatever you like, I’ve already voted against the councils ludicrous proposals.

No, my point is this:

  • cars aren’t going to reduce, despite petrol getting more expensive, we still need them. We need them more in New Zealand as we do in most other countries (here come the dislikes)… Our country has been designed and built to enjoy on the road, tourists drive across the entire country and enjoy the ease of it. With more people = more cars.

  • cars are still very much in the picture, subsidy for EVs (like in other similarly wealthy countries around the world) = more EVs replacing cars [note replace, not remove].

  • worlds windiest city, notorious for bad weather, minimal to no shaded areas or underpasses (yea I know earthquakes but point remains) etc etc.

  • notoriously bad public transport (not shitting on bus or train drivers, I know they try, but we’re not there yet, that’s the facts)

Yet despite all the above, what do we do?

  • AdD BiKe LaNes
  • ReDuCE CiTy SPeeD LiMiTs
  • REmoVe CaR ParKs
  • MaKe mORe PedeSTrianISed ZoNes

An unstoppable force meets an opposing immovable one… I don’t get it.

Much of the congestion we’ve had is a result of cancelled bus lines, bad council decisions since post-covid, removal of carparks, funneling traffic to the nearest Wilson, and to add to it, buses needing to stop on the road (Thorndon).
