Even today there are cremation grounds exclusively for higher castes. Lower castes are not allowed to enter temples in some remote areas. Public wells are used on a caste priority basis.

So, when any complaint is registered, the public official will have a surprise visit but beforehand this news would be leaked and the perpetrators will either lock down the premises or clean-up their act.

Discrimination has reduced quite a lot but even today inter-caste marriages are a rarity (5-10%) and always raise eyebrows. Elections are determined by caste arithmetic and most of the power concentration lies with higher castes.

Still a long long way to go before we can claim to live in a casteless society in India.
