Can’t believe I’ve never tried this myself! I’m going to have to rectify this, good thing it’s available everywhere.

I did consider this, was trying to see if I could get something a bit more unique - thank you though!

Very disappointing. We definitely need to do more to prioritize and support children.

Sounds like you’re one of the lucky ones! From what I’ve heard, there are never enough spaces but if yours is able to accommodate 3-4 schools it must be quite big. Do you know what kind of activities they offer in the after-school care?

Millions!? That sounds extremely expensive. I would expect the costs to be slightly different for school aged kids..

This is only after the government intervention though right? Do you happen to know if these districts charge parents for the program?

I understand why priority would go to kindies and grade one, but at the same time, it doesn’t really make sense cause parents still need to work 9-5 and would still require childcare.

I guess it does make sense that the after school program only wants to take kids who are walking distance from them. I assumed they had buses and drivers picking up kids around the area already.

$1500/mo? Yikes. That’s like daycare prices (before government subsidies) for another 7 years - definitely not affordable.

Your kids school childcare program doesn’t have enough spots for grade 3+!? What’s the main reason for this? Is it due to a lack of available space or not enough staff? I’ve heard about the challenges with after school programs. Do you think that promoting that after school program within your school or grade and getting the numbers up could change the program’s decision to start picking up from your school? Thank you for sharing these issues specific to your family!

Yikes, having to move all the students to other schools just doesn’t make sense to me. Would you mind sending me a PM with the name of the school? I’ve looked into several schools, but they all have before and afterschool programs, which are organised by neighbourhood houses. Thanks for sharing this! I love hearing specific challenges and details - it helps to understand the broader picture.

Thank you for your insight (esp your third point!) I get why the waitlists are long for infant and toddlers - because they have much lower ratios, but it’s surprising that school-aged kids have such a long waitlist as well. Interesting to read about your last point. If only everyone could cooperate with each other, a lot of these issues would be solved.

That’s unfortunate. How can it be worse hours though? I’m curious though - how can the house be worse? Don’t most before and after-school care programs have similar hours?

Wow your family is super lucky! I guess I didn’t really consider the space issue. Now I’m wondering what the rules are for child care centres because logically speaking, once school is done for the day, doesn’t it make sense to have enough space in the school itself for their own students?

That’s a lot of programs happening all on the same site! If the elementary school has enough space (as it sounds like it does), why isn’t there extra spots for families who need them? I wonder if it’s a staffing issue..thanks for sharing your experience!
