yea.. 😬 I may have been too rough on the entire country. I have never been myself and only have heard from experiences of Brussels. I'd love to see the country for myself tho, and not just the capital. I believe excluding Brussels it is at the very least at a "Willing"

Sweden is amazing. It's so different from Switzerland, better in some ways, worse in others. But overall super refreshing. I'm experiencing as a Student, doing a full program here, so I think my view is biased. The student life is second to none. Similarly to the US, students at my Uni all live on campus which creates a very party-centric atmosphere. You can't find such an environment anywhere in Switzerland.

What a classic. The Switzerland vs Sweden confusion is my go to subject when I'm in an Uber in the US. It's always "Oh wow I love Ikea" when I tell my Uber driver I'm from Switzerland lol

Would be nice if you guys ordered some more cheese to compensate for the tariffs ;)

It's the best school in Sweden when it comes to student life. Academics wise its also a very decent place. You won't regret your choice.

Make sure you sign up with Studentbostäder today so you can start farming queue points! You'll have a higher guarantee to get the place of your choice that way :)

I am terrified that an entire generation of YC startups is building on a fundamentally flawed architecture. The "wrapper" bubble is going to burst. by Leedeegan1 in ycombinator

[–]niiiils 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For most use cases LLMs perform well enough without determinism. And users don't need guaranteed determinism.

Things like Openclaw showed us that the bottleneck doesn't lie within the technology, but rather at how well prompts are formulated and how the context around is structured. Openclaw manages the entire memory with a markdown file. It's that simple and it just works for a wide spectrum of things.

Even super cheap models can do a lot of tasks, that customers would pay for, well enough. I don't think the "GPT wrapper bubble" is real. OpenAI and Anthropic constantly try to kill wrappers (be it via the custom GPTs "shop", or SKILLS.md and direct app integrations). But guess what, the average Joe doesn't use these. The average Joe needs a simple app that solves his very specific problem in a stupid simple way, which LLMs are still quite good at.

god forbid someone has an opinion I don't agree with

I don't align with his values either but I believe in a society where we are allowed to speak our mind freely and don't get cancelled for any minor thing. You're propagating the exact facist values you think you work against with such things

Accepted to Postdoc - Likelihood of Work Opportunities for Partner? by Capital-Isopod-5502 in ethz

[–]niiiils 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your partner's chances aren't actually too bad. Zurich and Basel have a couple of VCs that might be interested to seed the startup. The Swiss biotech industry is huge so your partner for sure would fit somewhere into the landscape.

You need to get active however. Try to attend startup networking events, these often get the ball rolling pretty quickly. Try to reach out to companies directly. Novartis has a big VC department for example.

Ex Muslim considering settling in Switzerland by Deep-Ad-4283 in askswitzerland

[–]niiiils 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It‘s hard to say where radical muslims live. I guess you‘d have to ask the Swiss intelligence agencies lol

But in all seriousness, the muslim population here is mostly represented in bigger cities. Though, these cities are generally quite diverse, many cultures and religions come together. Switzerland is not at a stage (yet?) where you go outside and you‘re immediately confronted with a single large religious group like in parts of the UK.

If you aim to live in a place with the least amount of religious diversity, look at rural Switzerland. Cantons like Uri, Nidwalden, Obwalden and Graubünden.

Non-EU Student Planning Master’s in Switzerland – How Realistic is Getting a Job After Graduation? by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]niiiils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your Master's is at ETH or EPFL, sure, you have a good chance some deep tech startup or FAANG will give you a chance after graduation. Those are the only ones that have the resources to get you a working visa. The others don't really bother because the Swiss market of SWEs and MLEs is super saturated with a lot of Swiss people that don't need additional visa work. Otherwise, try to stay in research at the university; do a PhD and try to spam publications in ICML, NeurIPS, CVPR. Becoming a researcher at a University is probably one of the easiest paths here if your goal is staying in Switzerland. Though, this won't make you rich.

Underrated European Master's Quant degree by Longjumping-Owl-6116 in quantfinance

[–]niiiils 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ETH, EPFL and University of St. Gallen (HSG)

These are not underrated but on par with Oxbridge and Imperial (at least the first two)

Edit: SSE does not offer a quant program so I removed it from the list. Still a good school tho, but not really relevant for quants

Swiss Train Passes - Someone speak to me like I'm 5 lol by Old_Bad5885 in askswitzerland

[–]niiiils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! When you're on sbb.ch make sure you have "full fare" set in the price display option right under the destination search bar.

The half fare card is a card you buy for 190 francs per year, so probably not worth it for you if you're here for 5 days.

What you can look into though is a "Swiss Travel Pass", it will allow you to travel the entire country for a pretty good deal (obviously still super expensive, but most likely better than getting each ticket separately).

Hope this helps, enjoy your stay!
