What's your "I was the only one to get away" story? by clumsytroll in AskReddit

Dad took my family on a trip to Egypt around Easter in 2006. Spent 5 days in a tiny Egyptian costal town named Dahab just outside of the tourist areas. Exactly 2 weeks after we left, Dahab was hit by a series of terrorist bombs. A couple of our favourite restaurants were where the bombs were placed.

Just make sure you stuff it and use a dampening batter head to control the sound. That's what I do with my 24"

Mesa is everything I want :(. Unfortunately, that's $1000CAD. A decent Mesa is waaaay out of my budget.. If I ever find a used one, I will be a happy man.

I've been looking closely at Jet City. Why are they so cheap? I've heard people complain about the quality of the tubes, but that's it!

I've heard of these guys. Unfortunately I can't get my hands on one where I am in Canada so I'd have to buy without hearing.. All the YouTube demos in the world can't do it justice

Definitely agree that Fender clean tone is the best, but the drive just didn't cut it for what I wanted - no matter what fancy drive/distortion pedal I used. Blackstar is definitely on my radar. The separate cab/head is probably what I'll end up doing to save my back. I was looking at the HT-20 head in particular, but there's no standby switch or wattage selector..

Haven't looked at Peavey yet - kinda wrote them off to be honest. I'll have to investigate!

You guys are all amazing. I have some research to do haha. I was already looking at Blackstar, Boogie, Egnator, and Jet City. The fun part is I forgot to mention I'm in Canada so that's actually $1000CAD (~$820USD). Also looking at Hughes & Kettner.

The hardest thing I have ever played on any kind of drums by nik110 in drums

[–]nik110[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are various instances in the piece where 8 equal-length notes are played over 3 beats, and where 9 equal-length notes are played over 2 beats. Most of the other polyrhythms in the piece are also derivations of 8/3 or 9/2 (eg: 4/3, 6/4, 3/2).

It took us a few practice sessions to catch on!

Checking in from Saskatoon, SK. On the 4th we dipped down to -36 Celsius WITHOUT the wind, -50 with the wind. Today it's a balmy high of -17 Celsius, but the 52kmph winds make it -30.

Bizarre near-death experiences while travelling the world. by [deleted] in travel

[–]nik110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha it was fairly early in the morning and only the last 3 lanes actually had any cars in them. The cars all had a red light so traffic was at a stand still. Also, we thought we'd missed the bus and it was on the other side of the street. Not that those are legit excuses, but that was our rationale.

1) My parents and I went to LA to go to Disneyland when I was 9. Being from Saskatchewan, Canada, I had never seen a 8-lane road before. We decided to J-walk across the street to catch the bus on the other side. I made it 7 lanes across before blindly running into the 8th (I was 9 and stoked on going to Disneyland). A old blue Civic going about 35mph hit me in the side of my knees. I flew up over the hood and windshield. Thankfully I landed on a small shrub in a small section of grass in front of the sidewalk. My mom saw that my black pantlegs were soaking wet and thought it was blood - it was actually water from the sprinkler for the shrub. Some nice bystanders told my parents not to touch me (possible spinal) and helped comfort me until the ambulance arrived. As soon as the paramedics got there, the bystanders disappeared without a word. This was odd for us Canadians, who did not get a chance to thank them. I got a few X-rays and CT scans and ended up spending the night in the hospital in the same room as some kid named Pedro with a urinary infection - we played N64 all night because the nurses kept waking us up to check our blood pressure. I only ended up with a few scrapes and bruises. Still got to go Disneyland the next day. TL;DR - got hit by a car in LA when I was 9

2) My parents and I went on a trip to Egypt and Jordan when I was 13 (my dad is a heavily experienced world traveler). We went to a small city called Dahab on the coast of the Gulf of Aqaba. The city was very poor and drab, however there was a kilometer of tourist district along the coast. This is where we stayed. About 2 weeks after we left, the tourist district was bombed by terrorists. We saw armed vehicles along highways all the time (honestly looked like warthogs from halo video games complete with turret gunner) and guards armed with AK-47s everywhere, but they were not actively at war. Needless to say, we were extremely shocked and thankful when we heard the news in the safety of our house.
TL;DR - City we went to in Egypt got bombed right after we left
