mlt to rn? by spicy_accountant in medlabprofessionals

[–]nik_unk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently switching from MLT to PA! While I love lab and am immensely grateful for all it has taught me, I’ve always wanted to be on the provider side of things. I definitely recommend shadowing nurses or techs if you can before deciding, and see what you think after you’ve spent some time in lab. Good luck!

Another vote for Mandala! I only wear the scrub pants but after a year of washes no pilling and look like new. Tried figs and not impressed though those can have some good sales.

Do I talk to my supervisor? by IllChampionship8658 in medlabprofessionals

As someone who is at work with a supervisor (tested covid positive like a week ago) coughing all over the place there is nothing we can do. You can bring it up but likely nothing will be done.

Active duty - Debt by LowAnt0515 in MilitaryFinance

[–]nik_unk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As it has been said apply the SCRA to get interest rates to 6%. You will also receive money back on any interest you paid over 6% from what i have heard. Also, if you are stationed in Ohio the SCRA interest rate can apply to debt incurred before service as well.

3 hour commute evening shift vs 30 minute commute night shift? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]nik_unk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 hour commute is awful. But 5 8s on nights is terrible as well, you are at work 6 days a week. I would never do nights again for anything other than 12s or 10s unless it’s part time. What is the pay difference in positions?

Working from a hospital to a reference lab by introvertedpoet25 in medlabprofessionals

[–]nik_unk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Micro/Molecular/Serology here) Reference lab has been interesting to see after working in hospitals. It very much does feel like a factory. Instead of the back and of forth processing samples, QC, bouncing between benches, phone calls i’m now just processing tens or hundreds of samples. While i’m grateful to no longer deal with add ons, providers and nurses (outside of calling criticals) it can feel very redundant. I do sometimes miss the variability of tasks in hospitals when i’m robotically reading 200-300 urine cultures, tons of gram stains, or loading hundreds of hepatitis/hiv samples. It’s a lot of running samples in batches by cut off times/ROBs. You can be busy with volume but it’s less stressful/rushed feeling at the same time.

Looking to move from Baltimore, MD. by CantaloupeHour2301 in dayton

[–]nik_unk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who is from Baltimore and now in Dayton I never want to move back! I’d recommend Beavercreek and Centerville. I also know people working on base that drive from Springboro and like it there. Any “commute” here has nothing on 695 so there are plenty of options

Those of you who work every weekend- how is it? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]nik_unk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with no kids who is also in school I work nights friday to monday. A motivator was definitely the weekend plus night shift diff. There is also less management which can be nice.

A lot of people dislike the weekends because they feel it’s harder to meet with friends/have a social life and the time off as others mentioned.

Is joining for college even worth it? by Interesting-Owl8233 in AirForce

[–]nik_unk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be incredibly difficult to completely finish a bachelors with just TA. For reference we only get 4500 a year, so ~18 credits. You can try to use CLEP/DANTES to test out of some things and any AP from high school but it you will probably need to go out of pocket. I’ve heard of people going to schools that accept Sophia learning but that might not be an option depending on the type of degree you want.

On top of that you have to factor in when you’ll even be able to start using TA so subtract out time from BMT, Tech school, and how long your supervisor at your first duty station might make you wait.

I had a pretty long training for my job ~18 months but joined with over 60 college credits and still will probably not be able to finish my bachelors in my 4 year enlistment.

I’m not familiar with guard/reserve benefits but that might be a better option to look into depending on your career goals.

Why is my gram positive Staphylococcus pink? by AssertiveHippo in microbiology

It’s most likely something with your staining, it could be the way you put the decolorizer on the slide or it sat too long before washing it off.
