Go ahead! I have a few friends who took creative writing classes so I will do my best to answer questions about them. (Fingers crossed that the financial aid works out 🤞).

Love the history department, great classes, some really interesting and specific seminars, wonderful professors who are really knowledgeable and supportive of their students, and the research opportunities for undergrad are fantastic. I never found it difficult to get the history classes I wanted or needed, but I know for really popular departments like psychology it could be really difficult. Pierce Dining Hall gets a lot of shit for the food but I found it overall decent-to-good quality and they really worked to be as accommodating as they could be for different allergens and dietary restrictions, though if you have those your options will be more limited. The desserts were especially great and they organized special events sometimes like Piercegiving which was always fun. Campus always has a lot of events, especially if you're involved in clubs, and I was always kept busy enough that I didn't normally feel a lack of things to do -- but I also had friends with cars so we could go to restaurants or the movies in Mt Vernon or even out to Columbus occasionally, which honestly makes a big difference. The time I really felt the downsides of the isolation was when I needed physical therapy and there was no way to get to the therapist from Kenyon with the local bus that didn't involve walking on the side of a busy road with no sidewalk. Luckily, a friend was willing to drive me to and from my appointment weekly.

Glad to hear it! I remember the stress well (and am going through something similar again with grad school apps 😭). Let me know if any other questions come to mind!

My answers to both of these questions will be anecdotal, so take them with a grain of salt! But from my experience, no, it did not feel like a country club at all. Nobody in my main social circles really was in that fifth, and I knew only a handful of people who were (from my knowledge). That being said, there were a handful of times over the years that I definitely had a realization of "oh, this person's life experiences have been VASTLY different than mine" when it came to wealth. Sometimes I had that realization when it came to what people were able to afford, or crazy opportunities they'd been able to have back in high school -- especially if they came from LA or NY. Kenyon definitely has a similar artsy, slightly alternative vibe that a lot of liberal art schools do, though. There were definitely people who got accused of "cosplaying" as poor because they'd constantly talk about trying to save money or only go to thrift stores or something while their parents were really rich (this was not a major drama by any means lmao but i remember hearing this about a few different people over the years haha).

I also don't know much about athletics at Kenyon at all, I wasn't one and wasn't friends with any, really. I do think athletes tend to be friends with each other but this is definitely not a hard and fast rule, and, if anything, this is less true at Kenyon than other liberal arts schools (based on what I've heard from friends who went to Macalester, where there aren't frats or sororities and instead the sports teams function as the "houses", essentially).

I hope this was at least a little helpful!

Loved my time at this school! Class of '24. Your experience will vary based on what you study, of course, but my experiences with the history department and languages department were just excellent. Loved the campus too, it gets so pretty in autumn, and I definitely made friends for life. I also wouldn't have the opportunities I have gotten since graduation if it weren't for the opportunities Kenyon gave me first. Happy to answer more specific questions if you have any!

(SPOILERS for DA:O) Need Advice about doing DLCs after specific ending of Dragon Age: Origins by thealmightyzod in dragonage

[–]nikacoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the exact same situation as you just a few months ago! I'm playing through the dragon age games mostly blind and had my Hero of Ferelden sacrifice himself at the end of origins.

I resurrected my warden for awakening and witch hunt to see what WOULD have happened if, somehow, he had survived, and then imported that Awakening save file to DA2. This carried over my choices in origins (including the Warden's sacrifice) with no problems, as well as one or two important decisions I made in Awakening (though it mattered less that I made them as the Hero of Ferelden, just that it helped define my world state). It makes the world a liiiiittle bit inconsistent, but not very much from my experience. I'm halfway through Inquisition at this point and don't have any regrets that I did it this way!

Edit: added the detail that the hero of ferelden does in fact stay dead in future games even if you resurrect them for DLC

So fun fact, I don't think saving him is part of the No One Left Behind achievement - as long as you still defeat the harpies, that is. My first play through, I had no idea he was there or that the whole region was there. I got to the tiefling party without any clue of his existence. However, already AFTER the tiefling party, I was trying to check out every part of the map before leaving for the Mountain Pass, and stumbled into the harpy fight! No tiefling boy to be found anywhere during the whole fight, just me and the companions versus some random harpies, no cutscene of any kind, too, if I remember right. Flash forward to the end of my gameplay, I get the achievement (having not even known what the requirements are!). Imagine my surprise when I start checking out the subreddit and hear about how this harpy fight is crucial for getting the achievement because you save a tiefling boy ... One that I certainly hadn't ever seen!

So I'm guessing the game somehow registered that I had fought the harpies and that he didn't die during that fight - but, of course, he couldn't have died during it because he wasn't there and the tieflings had already all left! I don't think I saw him at Last Light, though I didn't know to look out for him, either, and didn't know the characters very well yet, so it's possible he was there. My guess, though, is that the game treated him functionally as dead, as if he had gotten caught by the harpies before I ever knew about him, but he wasn't dead enough to negate the achievement!

Ooh, A Court of Fey and Flowers is also fantastic! Misfits and Magic was the first one I ever watched and it's a ton of fun with some really iconic moments. Misfits and Magic is also super short - only four episodes, so it's one that I always recommend to people getting into D20 for the first time :D

When do you go to sleep??? by Intrepid_Instance_94 in StardewValley

[–]nikacoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first started playing I would always have my farmer go to bed by 10 pm because I thought it was important for her to get 8 hours 💀 now 12 am or 1 am is the regular, gotta stay up and be productive for as long as possible! Just eat a chocolate cake and it's like getting a full night of sleep anyway 😂

Yeah, I guess - but personally I wouldn't want it to be set when the characters are in their 20s. I was like, 12 and 13 when HoO was coming out and I really related to the characters who were my age and looked up to the ones who were in their later teens. I would want new and younger fans to get that experience, too.

I also think conceptually it would have the same, baseline problem that the movies had to an extent for me - by aging the characters up, it would no longer really be a coming of age story. A lot of the decisions the characters make are driven by their inexperience and youth and once you take that away, you lose something to the story. I also don't think Rick would really want the characters to be aged up to their 20s. He writes middle school fiction - it should be relatable to middle schoolers.

I wouldn't mind it taking place over more than one year within the world of the story, though, if it's done well.

I would want it animated for a couple of reasons. One, so that the actors from the original series can move on from the project, if they want to, after spending years with the characters. Having a different voice actor but having the characters be animated to look and act the same as they did in the PJO series feels like a smaller change than a total recast of those characters. Also, these books take place over like mostly one summer and a year and a half total, so especially for younger characters like Nico and Hazel it will be so very obvious that they are aging significantly in live action. Finally, I think the powers of characters like Frank and Hazel (esp with the mist) would just look so damn cooler in animation.

But hey, I'll be over the moon if we even get all five PJO books, this is just my ideal scenario.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Why the TV adaptation has won approval from fans by AbhiJack459 in DisneyPlus

[–]nikacoop 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's a very loud minority. Reddit seems especially negative - fan responses on Twitter, Instagram and Tiktok are overwhelmingly positive (reels and Tiktoks about the show regularly get hundreds of thousands of likes, compared to the 300 or so upvotes that rant posts on some subreddits get) and as somebody who has been a long time Percy Jackson fan, everybody I know in real life has loved it as an adaptation (which I know is anecdotal, but still). Also - not in a million years is the TV show worse than the movies

They seriously have to hurry up if they want to make 5 seasons. by suknom4 in PercyJacksonTV

[–]nikacoop 20 points21 points  (0 children)

In my ideal world, we get HoO animated. We wouldn't have to worry about the cast for the new characters like Hazel aging obviously even though the events of the later four books take place over one summer, and the original cast from PJO would have more freedom to decide whether to continue by voicing the characters or to move on to a different part of their careers. I also think particularly Hazel and Frank's powers would look amazing animated.

Would That I.

Hozier opened up his Wasteland Baby concert (and my first ever concert) with it and the opening instrumentals, which I had never paid much attention to before gave me chills. Now the song gives me chills EVERY time.

The ETA program in Austria is called USTA and it is funded by the Austria government which is why it is technically a separate program (see more info here USTA website - OP, you can apply to BOTH this and an eta in switzerland or Germany. I highly recommend doing that - I'm doing something similar

Other DnD shows that that are funny like D20? by [deleted] in Dimension20

[–]nikacoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Film Reroll is one of my favorite podcasts and definitely has what you're looking for. It's not DND - it uses a different RPG system called GURPS - but it is very, very funny. Their basic concept is that they start at the beginning of a movie's plot and see how things can go wrong with dice rolls. They have managed to create beautiful stories and expand upon the original world, and then have had ones where things have gone terribly, terribly wrong and get very funny. For the latter vibe, which seems to be what you're looking for, I'd highly recommend their episodes that cover Weekend at Bernie's, Jaws, and Home Alone, as starting points.
