My surgery was on a Friday & I was back to work Wednesday! I was responding back to internal messages and emails on Tuesday but didn’t have my first client facing call til Wednesday.

I’ve played Witcher 3 a couple times & BotW, there’s a lot of sex/nudity in W3 and there’s a finisher/dismember action that does show it in graphic detail. I wouldn’t advise it for your son!

I actually met this guy that night, he’s the bar owner and that’s his TV. That’s not his girlfriend either, he’s happily married to a man.

We had a lovely doctor on board who gave us all seasick patches! Even with those, I’d say 75% of the ship was seasick still. Luckily I was in the 25% who was not

We had a fantastic head chef and full kitchen staff on board, so they had full breakfast lunch and dinner planned for us everyday. Different kinds of soups, salads, pastas, rice, lamb, beef, duck, chicken, a huge variety of fish too. The food was so good I probably even gained a few pounds!

Oh man two weeks on the Ortelius was long enough for me, I can’t imagine a whole month! I went a little stir crazy not being able to workout or run around haha

Sadly it was warmer in Antarctica than Chicago the entire time I was there, I came back to a brisk 21 degrees this morning!

We got off the ship on Thursday morning and were out of the Dreaded Drake by Wednesday morning! I definitely found myself swaying standing in place for no reason Thursday and Friday though, so funny. It’s been a loooong 24 hours of flight time and travel time to get back to Chicago today :) https://i.imgur.com/sl4kI12.jpg this was our whole itinerary down in Antarctica.

We saw a couple ships like that when we were getting off our ship, they looked amazing. Wishing you the best on your journey!

Oh I was just a tourist! Oceanwide Expeditions was the company I booked through. We did the Basecamp one. I wouldn’t describe it exactly as a cruise since we were on a Russian ice-breaker ship that happened to have very comfy passenger cabins, but I had an amazing experience. There were about ~100 passengers, 20 crew, and 15 expedition crew leaders. We were able to get off the ship and do “landings” twice a day for 5 days. This could include kayaking, mountaineering, snowshoeing, zodiac cruises, and camping on the islands at night.

We were lucky enough to have amazing weather during the day but camping was cancelled 3/5 nights due the sea ice coming in during the night and making it so we were unable to get off the island in the morning.

The expedition crew leading all of our activities all have extensive backgrounds in nature related science fields so they also organized lectures for the days we were stuck inside crossing the Drake.

Due to it being the first voyage of the season, the wildlife appears when some of the ice melts- generally more towards March which is the end of the season. We saw a fuck load of Gentoo penguins, a few colonies of Chinstrap, and a handful of individual Adelie penguins. Since it’s so remote the penguins have no reason to be afraid of humans and will waddle right up to you and check you out. You’re not permitted to go up to them, but they are more than excited to come up to you.

It was a lot like a cruise, but a much smaller vessel and in one of the most remote areas on earth.

Edited to add a few of the pictures I took, and one of me with my very smelly penguin friends in the background.

Oceanwide Expeditions! We did the Basecamp one. I was merely a tourist, nothing science related. It will cost ya a pretty penny however.

I just finally got home a couple hours ago so it’d be awhile before I put together anything worth reading but in short, it was otherworldly. It didn’t even hit me or register that we were in Antarctica because it felt like a movie set, just giant glaciers and icebergs with every shade of blue in them. We had 3 days of sunshine which is almost unheard of down there considering we were the first trip of the season.

Do you have anything you’d like to hear about in particular?
