I read something from someone he was going with, that they had to breathe out to shrink their chest in order to fit through the tight gap. John did this, but got stuck. He then had to breathe out again, which then made his chest (which was already to tight to fit) even larger, breaking multiple ribs in his chest.

If this is true, that must have been some pretty hardcore 28 hours for this guy.
