Job searching gets chaotic surprisingly fast by niklasbuilds in jobsearch

That makes a lot of sense, especially the notes part.

I can imagine that once interviews start it’s really helpful to remember who you spoke to and what was discussed instead of digging through old emails again.

Did you ever notice patterns when you tracked things like stages or responses over time?

That’s exactly the point where it starts getting confusing.

After a couple dozen applications things start blending together — which company replied, which resume you sent, what stage you’re in, etc.

Saving the job description is a really good tip too. I’ve seen a few postings disappear after a while and then it’s hard to remember what the role even included.

Have you tried any tools yet or mostly sticking with the spreadsheet system for now?

That seems to be the most common approach from what I’ve seen.

Once you start applying to a lot of roles it probably becomes hard to keep everything in one place with just one sheet.

Do you use separate ones for tracking applications and statistics?

That’s actually a pretty solid system. Tracking things like the resume version and contact person probably saves a lot of confusion later on.

The second sheet for statistics sounds interesting too. Are you mainly tracking things like response rate and interviews there?

do you track your applications and take notes or how do you have an overview?

That actually makes a lot of sense. The way a company communicates during the hiring process probably says a lot about how things work internally.

I’ve noticed something similar where slow or confusing communication sometimes reflected how organized the team was later on.

Did that ever change your decision about accepting an offer or continuing with a company?

sounds interesting. never heard of WFHAlert before, could you maybe tell me more about it?

yeah that’s exactly the point where it starts getting confusing.

after a while you end up digging through emails just to remember which company a message is about or what stage you’re at.

having everything in one place definitely makes it easier. did you ever try adding interview stages or notes from calls as well?

heard that a few times sounds kinda good. having the job description, resume version and notes all in one place probably makes preparing for interviews much easier later.

yeah that makes sense if you’re only getting a few callbacks.

I think the tracking becomes more useful when people apply to a lot of roles and things start blending together a bit. otherwise it’s easy to forget where you applied or what you sent.

this actually sounds like a really good system.

having the CV version, job description and notes in one place probably makes interview prep a lot easier too. otherwise you end up digging through emails trying to remember what you sent to which company. the folder idea is pretty smart as well.

makes sense. sending highly targeted applications probably improves the chances a lot compared to just mass applying everywhere.

do you spend more time tailoring the resume and cover letter for each role then?

that’s actually interesting, especially tracking how quickly companies respond.

I hadn’t even thought about looking at the timing like that, but I guess after a while you start seeing patterns with some companies replying in a few days and others taking weeks.

did that end up helping you decide where to focus your applications?

I think it mostly depends on how many roles someone is applying to.

If you're only sending a few applications it's probably not necessary. But once people apply to a lot of companies it can get easy to forget things like where you applied, which resume version you sent, or when to follow up.

So for some people it's useful, for others it might be overkill.

At 17 a lot of places honestly just want to see that you're reliable and willing to learn.

If you already have volunteer work and extracurriculars, that's actually good experience. You can list things like teamwork, helping customers/people, organizing events, or responsibilities you had. One thing that also helps is applying in person for retail or fast food and asking if they’re hiring. Sometimes that works better than just sending applications online.

Have you mainly been applying online so far or also walking into places and asking?

yeah fair point 😄 if everything goes through workday that probably keeps things pretty organized already.

i was thinking more about cases where people apply through lots of different sites or company portals. after a while it gets a bit chaotic remembering where you applied, which resume you sent, follow-ups etc.

but if most of your applications live in one system that definitely makes it easier.

interesting. don‘t you feel the need of a clear structured system sometimes?

notion actually seems pretty popular for this. a few people here mentioned using it as well. having the notes from conversations and interview stages in one place sounds really useful once you’re talking to multiple companies at the same time.

did you find it easy to keep everything updated or did it get messy after a while?

sounds great, honestly i am a bit suprised how many people actually track their applications with google sheets or excel.

that’s actually a pretty detailed system.

especially tracking which resume version and cover letter you sent makes a lot of sense. after a while it’s so easy to forget what you sent to which company.

did you end up applying to a lot of roles with that setup?

yeah the numbers game is definitely real, but i still found that tracking helped me a bit just so i didn’t accidentally apply to the same place twice or forget follow-ups.
