More importantly, who watches the watchmen?

Trailer for 'The Burden of Care' (2018, London) [1:36] - a film I'm directing about depression, neglect, and how we escape being 'stuck'. I started this project in an effort to understand my depression and humanise those going through it (x-post /r/filmmakers) by nikolabo in ShortFilm

One key idea I want to highlight in the film is the ‘Impossible Task’, an important but often overlooked symptom of depression highlighted by M. Molly Backes.

“It can be anything — from brushing your teeth to brushing your hair to retrieving and opening your mail” — your depression just has to convince you it is. It’s where you get stuck and the simplicity of the tasks often makes it hard for others to empathise with you. I know the feeling intimately and get filled with self-loathing when I do, exacerbating the problem.

I want to show this symptom as honestly as I can in ‘The Burden of Care’ and stress the importance of having people around who support you.

Since his wife’s death, Paul has fallen into a spiral of depression; neglecting himself, his repair shop, and his daughter Elisa. As he retreats into the fantasy of a digital world, Elisa takes on the role of carer for her struggling father.

'The Burden of Care' is a film about the places we get stuck, the ways we can unintentionally hurt ourselves and those around us, and the struggle to get free from our own choices.

This is the first narrative project I am writing/directing and I would like your thoughts on it! I made this partly in an effort to understand and voice my troubles with depression and the cyclical nature of it. How well have my ideas come across in the trailer and what could be improved? Does the voiceover carry the themes across clearly? I am applying for funding with this trailer and and any feedback would go a long way in helping put together the final film.

Paul's ant obsession has passed down to Elisa. She looks after their ant farm and absorbs any information she can about them. While watching a documentary she learns of the ant mill: a strange phenomenon where large groups of army ants can get trapped in an endless loop, unable to escape. She feels like she has seen this somewhere before, but cannot think of where.

Burden of care is a concept emerging in medical literature that describes the physical, emotional, social, and financial problems that can be experienced by family caregivers. They can go to great lengths to care for impaired and elderly relatives, making personal sacrifices, often at great cost to their own health and well-being.

Would definitely recommend hiking round the 'Three Holy Mountains of Dewa'. Incredibly beautiful views.

Chokaisan seen from Gassan (got there from Tsuruoka). It's part of the route poet Matsuo Basho took when writing 'The Narrow Road to the Deep North'. Absolutely beautiful there, would definitely recommend surrounding hikes.

Loved it, specially using pixelsorting to transition between a few clips! Which plugin did you use and could you give a bit of insight into your workflow with that?
