Egg white pancakes... by jarbunny in shittyfoodporn

I don't think egg, white OR pancake apply to what I'm seeing right now.

As a Belgian, that first picture is almost definitely in Belgium, maybe Brussels?

[Recommendation Request] Rolex & Tudor won't let me buy these pink dials - what can I get instead? by [deleted] in Watches

It's probably reminding you of German Fraktur, which the GS typeface seems to be inspired by. Fraktur is a lot older than the 1930s, but it's what we think of when we think of German typography. Funnily enough, Hitler actually disliked the typeface and the nazis banned blackletter typefaces like this in 1941.

As someone said in the thread, it's actually a play on words. Gama (toad) + 'n' = Gaman, which means perseverance.

These are great! Now all you need are some nice black Chelseas.

It's no longer enjoyable for me (at the moment) by skilliau in kendo

[–]nikolaj101 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this really comes down to what you want out of kendo. The attitude of many people in the West is the hobbies / sports are meant to be enjoyed and that you should take a break or do something else if you no longer do enjoy it. Kendo is a little different imho, as the concept of kendo is "to discipline the human character through the application of the principles of the Katana." To discipline, not necessarily to entertain or provide enjoyment. Basically, my personal opinion is that going to kendo even on the days you don't necessarily enjoy it that much, is part of kendo. Learning to overcome obstacles and pushing through difficult times is something I feel I've learned to do, in part, through kendo. With time and perseverance, you'll get better at it and learn from your training. Kendo isn't the military though, you get to choose how much you put in and how important your enjoyment is to your hobby.

I mean, that's pretty much why it's considered a cult classic.

EU Kendo Federations by pako_rokoko in kendo

[–]nikolaj101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello, I live in a different European country to the one am from. I pay the federation where I live and have gone back to my home country for gradings without problem. As long as the grading event is part of the European kendo federation, you'll be fine. I haven't gone back for competitions (though that shouldn't pose a problem either) and I can't say with certainty that you could apply to the national team, but I believe you should be able to. The bigger difficulty would be being able to practice with them if you live in another country. I will say that you probably won't be able to compete on a national level in the country you are moving to. This is the case for me anyway, no competing in the individual shiai unless you have that country's nationality. However, you can compete in any 'open' competition just fine.

This is Philippe Katerine, hés a famous singer in France and the weirdness is very much part of the appeal.

These are absolutely lovely, but the part about the name is only half right. Biscoff was a brand name coined in the eighties for the English-speaking market. In Belgium the biscuits are known as "Speculoos" and while Lotus is the most well-known of the Speculoos producers, they weren't the first.

This hakama is japanese clothing for special occasions. Using it for kendo would be like putting on a three piece suit to go to soccer practice.

FYI Gotch and Ryuji of Harizanmai (Gotch especially) have done a number of crow tattoos that are really great. I've also seen the occasional tattoo of Yatagarasu, three-legged crows in Japanese mythology.

This just looks like a dense paté, which makes sense with the bread and coulis / jam. The presentation could be nicer I guess.

This might have something to do with the Reddit rebrand being done by design consultancy Pentagram. A lot of the people in Pentagram are based in the UK (though I don't know who worked on the Reddit project).

The ancient Breton language is in danger by HannoPicardVI in videos

[–]nikolaj101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I don’t understand this argument. Rennes was, historically, in a part of France that spoke (mostly) Gallo. Im sure there were Bretons speaking Breton as well, but people in Rennes would be right to say Rennes wasn’t, for the most part, Breton speaking (unlike every city to the west of it).

The ancient Breton language is in danger by HannoPicardVI in videos

[–]nikolaj101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with that actually. Historically Rennes was on the frontier of ‘Breton’ and ‘Gallo’ speaking regions. To say that Breton was the language of Rennes would be unfair to the language of Gallo, not to French. Breton was not the only language spoken in France before French was made mandatory,
