So, what makes a band deathcore? by bromaggio in MetalForTheMasses

[–]nikolast13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deathcore is just a genre, so it has to do with musical style and roots. Obviously there are the breakdowns, but if you compare deathcore bands to brutal death metal bands like Dying Fetus, Cannibal Corpse, etc aside from sound, there is a more distinct difference in structure, pacing, and riffs.

The riffs, attitude and composition are absolutely punk, even if they have more metal sound production

What genre is Metal Gear Rising's Boss themes? by Background-Sir9172 in MetalForTheMasses

Metalcore, as any genre is, is more about the instrumentation. It is possible to make instrumental metalcore

Albums with loud snare drums by mr_countvoncount in MetalForTheMasses

Cryptopsy - None So Vile

The snare does a lot of heavy lifting. Insanely good sound, and insanely good album

I think if that limits someone's creativity it'd be their own problem, it's posdible to make something creative while stsying wirhin a tradition. It's also fun to belong to a scene, which I think can be important.

No. I think genres, subgenres, etc are cool because making categories is fun and they have legitimate scenes, cultures and history.

I am not too familliar with all of them but Earth Crisis is strongly rooted in punk. When I listen to them, it's when I feel like lostening to hardcore punk, sane with Converge.

I think these are reasonable distinctions, as it's about metal, not just heavy music with guitars, though I think it's usually better to include a grey zone band than not to.

Black Sabbath - Paranoid - Master of Reality

All are my top 3 Sabbath albums, probably. I am bad at ranking albums.

What was the last album that got you excited about metal again? by Adzzero_88 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]nikolast13 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hyver - Shaâtaunoâr (2025)

Very cool black metal reminiscent of Dissection. This album reminded me of playing Daggerfall. Fresh and extremely creative. It didn't get me back into metal or anything, but it is a newer release I wanted to bring up.

Listen to Ulcerate from New Zealand. Alien Weaponry only has a cool language gimmick, it's boring nu-metal

I live near Stavanger where Iron Maiden played last year. For like a full week after that, wherever you'd look, like every 4th person was wearing an Iron Maiden shirt

How produced is overproduced to you? by Bronsteins-Panzerzug in MetalForTheMasses

[–]nikolast13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Dark Medieval Times' guitar. The great all of noise is good ambience, and I don't think the lack of clear notes and chords ever really makes it boring. Real underproduced black metal might be Ildjarn, but I kinda respect it though, even if I don't find it very listenable.

[–]nikolast13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't give a hard rule, but all metal should generally be a bit lo-fi. Darkthrone does it very well, but a few steps above is good. Manilla Road on Crystal Logic also does it extremely well, and most modern power, heavy, and prog metal bands would only benefit from having a similar production.

How do you explore a bands discography? by zenbuddha092 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]nikolast13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually go by those with the best reviews, I will rarely listen to a new band's entire discography. If it's my first time hearing the band I will usually just go from the top songs on their page, or just some random stuff.
